About the Role

The OT Systems Engineer will play a critical role in managing and optimizing the Operational Technology infrastructure that supports vital operations at Haynes International including System optimization, downtime reduction, safety improvement, system integration and upgrades, and supporting digital transformation and innovation. By doing so, they will contribute to the organization’s efficiency, safety, cost-effectiveness, compliance and long-term sustainability.

Qualifications

EducationBachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience

Experience: Minimum of 5 years IT or related experience

Areas of Knowledge: Working knowledge of OT protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC, Industrial Network Infrastructure (e.g., SCADA, PLCs), and communication standards. Familiar with networking tools, firewalls, routers and switches is critical. Experience in securing OT environments against cyber threats and familiarity with NIST Cybersecurity Framework, or other relevant security standards. Experience with the integration of control systems with IT infrastructure and upgrading OT networks and systems. Knowledge of systems such as SCADA, DCS, PLC, and HMIs are essential. Experience working with specialized OT operating systems and environments in a hybrid IT/OT infrastructure.

Skills: Ability to perform risk assessments of OT systems and work closely with the Cybersecurity architect and other cross-functional teams to mitigate security vulnerabilities. Familiarity with leading or being a key player in upgrade or integration projects, Effective communication skills and the ability to work across IT and OT departments, as well as with third-party vendors. Ability to document network architectures, procedures and to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for system integration and upgrades. Ability to adapt to changing technological landscapes, producing innovative solutions for OT system improvements while ensuring a top priority of system security, and uptime. Experience in sectors that heavily rely on OT systems, such as manufacturing, Energy, Transportation or critical infrastructure is required. This role requires a blend of skills from both traditional IT networks and specialized OT environments, making experience in both areas highly desirable.

Role Responsibilities

  • Design, Implement, and maintain networks for industrial control systems, including Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, and other protocols and document any changes.
  • Diagnose and resolve network issues, including connectivity problems, performance issues and security vulnerabilities.
  • Perform management activities for existing hardware, systems and networks by creating and maintaining documentation, as it relates to OT network configuration, mapping, processes, security and service records.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, IP addressing, network protocols, routing, switching and micro-segmentation.
  • Migrate legacy systems to newer up to date OS’s and hardware.
  • Perform routine network maintenance, including software and hardware upgrades in the OT environment.
  • Oversee the existing OT network for the plant equipment, as well as any new software, hardware and systems as it relates to the OT network.
  • Determine and implement a reliable means of data collection and retention from various pieces of equipment throughout the plant.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to OT network configuration, mapping and processes.
  • Perform routine network maintenance, including software and hardware upgrades in the OT environment.
