Description:

We believe every student has the potential to succeed, but sometimes they need a targeted strategy, a fresh perspective, and a dedicated coach in their corner. Garfield Heights City Schools is launching "OST Clinics," a high-energy, high-impact, six-week after-school program designed specifically for students who need targeted support to successfully complete the Ohio State Tests (OSTs) in Algebra 1 and English 2 and progress toward graduation.

We are looking for three dynamic educators to lead these Clinics. This is not a traditional, passive study hall. The OST Clinic is an active, focused learning environment where educators will break down barriers, rebuild student confidence, and help students develop the skills and strategies needed for success on the OST and their graduation pathway.

The Clinic Coach will provide targeted academic remediation, facilitate engaging small-group learning sessions, build student confidence, and monitor student progress throughout the six-week program. Coaches will use student assessment data to identify specific areas of need and provide focused instruction designed to have the greatest impact on student performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver targeted remediation by pinpointing exactly where students are struggling and providing focused, high-impact lessons that address critical Algebra 1 or English 2 OST standard gaps.
  • Facilitate the "Clinic" experience by leading engaging, small-group sessions using active learning strategies, practice prompts, test-taking strategies, and opportunities to build testing endurance.
  • Build student confidence by helping students move from uncertainty and test anxiety toward confidence and a clear understanding of how to approach the test.
  • Analyze student assessment data to identify the 34 concepts and skills that may provide the greatest opportunity for improvement.
  • Monitor student progress throughout the six-week program to ensure students are academically prepared, confident, and ready for the retesting period.
  • Provide students with individualized feedback, encouragement, and support.
  • Create and maintain a positive, energetic, and focused after-school learning environment.
  • Connect with and motivate high school students, including students who may be discouraged by previous standardized testing experiences.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the Algebra 1 or English 2 OST, including test layout, question types, standards, and scoring expectations.
  • Collaborate with the other Clinic Coaches/Leaders to share instructional strategies, celebrate student growth, and support the overall success of the program.
  • Participate in preparation activities prior to the start of the six-week student program.
  • Prepare students for the Winter OST Re-Test Week.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Valid Ohio 7-12 teaching license in an appropriate content area, including 7-12 Mathematics, 7-12 English Language Arts, or relevant integrated certification.
  • Strong understanding of either the Algebra 1 or English 2 Ohio State Test, including test layout, question types, standards, and scoring expectations.
  • Ability to analyze student assessment data and identify high-priority concepts and skills that can have the greatest impact on student performance.
  • Ability to deliver targeted, standards-based remediation and instruction.
  • Ability to connect with and motivate high school students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage students in an active and focused learning environment after the regular school day.
  • Strong classroom management and small-group instructional skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and encouragement to students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other educators and program staff.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on student needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
  • Ability to adapt to the individual academic and social-emotional needs of students.
  • Commitment to helping students overcome barriers to OST success and progress toward graduation.

Note: The Superintendent and/or Board of Education may consider alternative qualifications as appropriate.
