A Brief Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager, the Orthopedic Technician provides orthopedic support services to both inpatients and outpatients at Tampa General Hospital. Responsibilities include the application and removal of casts, splints, braces, traction, overhead suspensions, and Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) devices. The technician ensures safe, timely, and accurate execution of orthopedic procedures, and completes related documentation & charging in EMR (EPIC). Ortho Tech is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe patient environment while providing their services. The role requires consistent collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, patients, families, and other multidisciplinary team members, adherence to established hospital policies and procedures, and performance of duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

What you will doApplies and removes casts, splints, braces, traction devices, overhead suspensions, and CPM machines according to physician orders and established protocols.Applies orthopedic devices correctly based on patient anatomy to promote safety, comfort, and effective treatment.Responds to ER calls within 30 minutes, OR calls within 30 minutes, and routine referrals within 1 hour.Ensures patient, staff, and family safety; follows infection‑control practices; and adheres to OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards.Provides timely updates to nursing staff and referring physicians; communicates professionally with patients and healthcare team members.Completes accurate, timely documentation of services provided and processes patient charges before end of shift.Participates in performance improvement initiatives, assists with departmental data collection, and supports operational efficiency.Educates patients, families, and caregivers on cast or splint care and assists with educational in‑services for residents, staff, and other clinicians.Works cooperatively with coworkers, maintains flexibility in assignments, and supports department objectives through positive conduct and communication.Consistently applies the principles of AKTiVe, ensuring respectful, courteous, and compassionate interactions with every patient and visitor.

Qualifications

Education QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GEDExperience QualificationsAnatomy and physiology experience and six (6) months in patient-related health care areas.Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of techniques for applying and removing casts, splints, braces, skeletal traction devices, overhead suspensions, and CPM machines in accordance with anatomical accuracy and clinical guidelines.Ability to recognize changes in patient condition, respond appropriately, update clinical staff, and identify alternative solutions when performing orthopedic procedures.Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to interact effectively and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff.Ability to respond to ER, OR, and routine referrals within required timeframes, manage multiple tasks, and maintain productivity standards in a fast‑paced environment.Skill in completing accurate patient documentation, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring proper patient charging and data entry.Ability to work cooperatively with coworkers and other departments, demonstrate professionalism, support department goals, and participate in training and development activities.
