What You'll Do:

Responsible for the orthopedic casting, bracing, and splinting of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: (include, but are not limited to)

  • Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders.
  • Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces.
  • Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting. Assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate clinical staff members.
  • Removes sutures and staples.
  • Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
  • Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures.
  • Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes.
  • Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
  • Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary.
  • Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures and other regulatory policies
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment
  • Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol and professional etiquette
  • Electronic medical systems, including Athena/Centricity, and Medi-Tech, PM and office management systems and procedures
  • Outstanding knowledge of MS Office
  • Working knowledge of office equipment

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year cast room / medical office experience

CERTIFICATE / LICENSE: Orthopedic Technician and / ATC Certification Preferred
