Job Description

Orthopaedic Technician I provides clinical support in the outpatient orthopaedic setting with responsibilities ranging from applying orthopaedic devices to assisting with minor procedures and wound care. This role involves moderate clinical autonomy, patient education, inventory coordination. The Orthopaedic Technician 1 must demonstrate competency in orthopaedic care delivery, sterile techniques, and patient support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Escorts and room patients; obtains and records full vital signs, including pulse oximetry.
  • Prepares and maintains exam and procedure rooms using sterile technique.
  • Ensures availability of charts, imaging, dictation, and lab results before each clinic session.
  • Applies, adjusts, fits, and removes a full range of orthopaedic devices including fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, splints, walking boots, slings, immobilizers, and other appliances.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on the care and use of orthopaedic devices and mobility aids such as crutches and canes.
  • Assists with minor procedures and sterile wound care.
  • Removes sutures and staples following proper infection control protocols.
  • Assembles and monitors orthopaedic traction and related equipment.
  • Tracks and manages inventory of casting materials and orthopaedic supplies. Maintains inventory of casting room supplies and orthopaedic equipment.
  • Provides guidance to patients on orthopaedic products recommended by the department.
  • Assists with administrative tasks including scheduling, patient check-in/check-out, and EMR documentation.
  • Serve as a communication liaison between patients and providers, promoting a positive patient experience and timely clinical care.
  • Provides guidance on the selection and use of orthopaedic supplies, braces, and equipment recommended by the department.
  • Ensures availability of patient charts, imaging, dictations, and lab results before each clinic session.
  • Assists with scheduling, check-in/check-out, and reception duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School graduation or its equivalent

Licensure

  • None

Experience

  • 1-3 years of related working experience preferably in an outpatient Orthopaedic clinic.

Physical Requirements

  • Walk, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulder frequently in an office setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 20 lbs. as part of the role
  • Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
