Job Description

The Orthopaedic Technician II provides orthopaedic support in an outpatient setting with responsibilities ranging from applying orthopaedic devices to assisting with minor procedures and wound care. This role includes advanced casting and splinting, procedural assistance, inventory oversight, mentorship, and support for high-level orthopaedic procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Escorts and room patients; obtains and records full vital signs, including pulse oximetry.
  • Applies, adjusts, fits, and removes a wide variety of orthopaedic devices, including fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, splints, walking boots, and immobilizers.
  • Assists in sterile procedures, including wound care, suture/staple removal, and minor office-based surgeries.
  • Assembles, adjusts, and monitors traction and orthopaedic equipment.
  • Applies and removes surgical dressings and orthopaedic hardware/devices per protocol.
  • Provides patient education regarding orthopaedic appliance care and mobility aid use.
  • Maintains infection control, sterile technique, and patient safety standards. Prepares and maintains exam and procedure rooms using sterile technique.
  • Ensures charts, imaging, and lab results are ready for each clinic session.
  • Leads or independently manages complex orthopaedic procedures, including post-surgical care.
  • Demonstrates and teaches proper orthopaedic techniques to new staff and medical trainees.
  • Serves as liaison among patients, providers, and care teams, ensuring clear instructions and continuity of care.
  • Participates in the development and review of protocols and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supports administrative tasks, including scheduling, patient check-in, and EMR documentation.
  • Leads clinic preparation by coordinating supplies and equipment availability.
  • Oversees inventory and ordering of orthopaedic supplies, coordinates with vendors and internal teams.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshoots equipment.
  • Attends departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school degree or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in an outpatient orthopaedic clinic

Physical Requirements

  • Walk, stand, and reach outward for long periods of time in a clinic setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and push or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
  • Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
