What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the Position

The Ortho-Prosthetist is responsible for supervising and delivering prosthetic and orthotic services within ICRC-supported Physical Rehabilitation Centres (PRC). The role ensures high-quality service provision, contributes to the implementation of international standards, and supports the development of national staff through mentoring and training. The position also contributes to the setup and management of rehabilitation services in complex humanitarian environments.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support the provision of prosthetic, orthotic, and wheelchair services within supported PRCs
  • Ensure compliance with ICRC and international P&O standards and service quality protocols
  • Provide clinical and technical mentoring to national staff and newly graduated professionals
  • Promote best practices in coordination with Physical Rehabilitation Programme (PRP) teams
  • Support PRC management in developing systems such as workflow organization, stock management, and supply chain processes
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams to ensure a comprehensive patient care approach
  • Implement or develop existing service user referral pathways in collaboration with other service providers
  • Contribute to the setup and development of new P&O centres when required
  • Monitor, analyse, and report on rehabilitation needs, activities, and programme outcomes

Relationships

Internally:

Works closely with Physical Rehabilitation Programme teams, PRC staff, project managers, and other ICRC departments

Externally:

Interacts with local health authorities, rehabilitation stakeholders, suppliers, and relevant partners in the field

Education & Experience Required

  • ISPO-recognized Bachelor of Science degree as a Prosthetist-Orthotist (formerly ISPO Category I)
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in prosthetic and orthotic service provision
  • Experience working in context other than your home country

Desired Profile & Skills

  • Additional relevant qualifications (e.g., podiatry, biomechanics, public health) are an asset
  • Strong motivation for humanitarian work
  • Ability to work under pressure in challenging environments
  • Capacity to lead and support multicultural teams
  • Flexibility and adaptability to unstable or resource-limited contexts
  • Experience in international humanitarian settings is highly desirable
  • Previous experience within the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement is an asset

Languages

  • English and French proficiency (minimum B2 level) is mandatory
  • Proficiency in Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian is an asset

  • No assignment to a country of apllicant's nationality (neutrality principle)
  • Medical fitness required prior to deployment
  • Manual driving license mandatory
  • Willingness to accept unaccompanied postings for the first 24 months

  • Estimated Start Date: Selected candidates will integrate in the pool and will be deployed in the field depending on operational needs.
