Semiconductor Orbital Welder

Position Summary

The Semiconductor Orbital Welder is responsible for independently programming, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting automated orbital welding systems used on high-purity stainless-steel process piping and tubing. The welder must understand the complete process from material preparation and purge setup through weld execution, inspection awareness, and required documentation.

Required Skills & Field Demonstration

• Program the orbital welding machine/power supply for the applicable pipe or tube size, wall thickness, material, weld schedule, and approved welding requirements.
• Select, enter, verify, and use the approved weld program and parameters for each weld configuration.
• Properly set up and operate the orbital welding machine, power supply, weld head, remote equipment, purge equipment, gas lines, and associated tooling.
• Select and correctly install the proper weld head, collets/inserts, tooling, and consumables for the pipe or tube size being welded.
• Correctly measure, cut, square, face, deburr, clean, and prepare pipe/tube ends without introducing contamination.
• Verify proper fit-up, alignment, and weld-head positioning before initiating the weld.
• Establish and maintain the required argon purge and shielding-gas conditions and understand the effect of oxygen contamination on high-purity welds.
• Perform the complete orbital welding process independently from initial material preparation through completion of the weld cycle.
• Monitor the weld cycle and recognize abnormal arc behavior, poor tracking, contamination, inadequate purge, discoloration, lack of penetration, misalignment, or other weld-quality concerns.
• Troubleshoot common field issues involving machine alarms, weld-head setup, tungsten/electrode condition, gas flow, purge, power supply, cables, programming, parameters, fit-up, and material preparation.
• Recognize when a weld should be stopped, rejected, repaired, or brought to supervision/Quality Control rather than continuing outside an approved procedure.
• Inspect completed welds for appearance, alignment, penetration indicators, discoloration/oxidation, cleanliness, and project-specific acceptance requirements.
• Maintain strict cleanliness of tubing, fittings, weld heads, facing tools, purge equipment, and work areas to prevent contamination of high-purity systems.
• Read and follow isometric drawings, spool drawings, P&IDs, weld maps, specifications, and approved welding procedures.
• Complete weld logs, weld identification, machine/program records, traceability documentation, and required quality-control records accurately.
• Demonstrate an overall level of knowledge, independence, and field proficiency consistent with a qualified semiconductor orbital welder.

Common Semiconductor Safety & Quality Expectations

• Follow all company, client, site-specific, cleanroom, PPE, and semiconductor safety requirements.
• Maintain strict material and weld cleanliness and protect high-purity piping/tubing from contamination.
• Follow approved welding procedures, project specifications, drawings, and quality requirements. Do not make unauthorized changes to approved welding processes or parameters.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, material discrepancies, weld defects, contamination concerns, or conditions that could affect installation integrity.
• Accurately complete required welding, quality-control, and traceability documentation.
• Maintain welding machines, purge equipment, tools, gas systems, and work areas in safe operating condition.
• Perform the work with Safety first, Quality second, and Productivity third.

Physical Requirements

• Selected candidates must be able to complete the following physical functions including but not limited to climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and other repetitive motions with or without a reasonable accommodation.
