The RN Oral Chemotherapy & Triage Nurse provides specialized oncology nursing care focused on patient education, medication management, symptom assessment, and telephone triage. This role ensures safe initiation and ongoing monitoring of oral chemotherapy treatments while coordinating patient needs within a multidisciplinary oncology team.

Key Responsibilities

Oral Chemotherapy Management

  • Provide thorough patient education on oral chemotherapy, including dosing, administration, side effects, and safe handling.
  • Assess treatment adherence, manage toxicities, and monitor patient progress through scheduled follow-up calls or visits.
  • Collaborate with pharmacists and providers to verify treatment plans, address medication issues, and manage refills or prior authorizations.
  • Document all assessments, teaching, and interventions clearly in the EHR.

Telephone Triage & Symptom Support

  • Respond promptly to patient calls and portal messages, performing focused clinical assessments.
  • Use oncology-specific triage protocols to guide symptom management and determine need for urgent evaluation.
  • Provide home-care instructions, escalate concerns to providers, and arrange same-day or urgent appointments when indicated.
  • Identify potential treatment complications early and coordinate appropriate interventions.

Care Coordination & Patient Support

  • Serve as a key contact for patients throughout their treatment journey, offering guidance, education, and emotional support.
  • Work closely with oncologists, APPs, pharmacists, social workers, and other team members to ensure seamless continuity of care.
  • Assist with scheduling labs, follow-up visits, imaging, and treatment-related appointments.
  • Participate in team meetings and quality improvement efforts related to oral chemotherapy and triage workflows.

Qualifications



Qualifications

Educational / Minimum Requirements:

BSN or Associate Degree

Current CT RN License in good standing.

One year of clinical nursing experience in acute or subacute care environment.

Basic Life Support (BLS)/ACLS/PALS

State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:

Current State of Connecticut licensure as a Registered Nurse. Certification from a professional nursing body preferred.

Bristol Health Mandated Educational Requirements:

General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually, Health Care Provider CPR w/BLS from American Heart Association. Successfully complete all training programs as determined by Education & HRD department. Other unit based competencies/skills as required.

Special Requirements:

Successfully complete unit based competency package, plus unit specific items. Strong team skills,

Physical Requirements:

Physical agility with repetitive occurrence including but not limited to; walking, running, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, reaching, standing, sitting, and twisting. Lifting greater than 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the work day. Looking at a computer monitor. Vision acuity correctable to normal. Hearing acuity correctable to normal. Acute sense of smell for normal perception. Ability to verbalize so that the average person can comprehend.

Work Environment:

Regular exposure to patient elements, occasional stress
