Job Shift: Day, JOB SUMMARY:

The Optometry Assistant/Technician supports AccessHealth’s optometry providers and assists patients throughout all stages of their visits. This position performs preliminary and ancillary testing, prepares and maintains examination rooms and equipment, and supports front office and optical functions to promote efficient, coordinated, patient-centered care.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Perform preliminary testing, including visual acuity, tonometry, autorefraction, autokeratometry, color vision, and stereoacuity, before the patient sees the optometrist, in accordance with training and established protocols.
  • Perform ancillary testing, including fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field testing, as directed by the optometrist and within demonstrated competency.
  • Prepare patients for testing, explain procedures in understandable terms, and provide supportive assistance to children and their families.
  • Accurately record test results and relevant patient information in approved patient record systems and communicate concerns promptly to the optometrist.
  • Assist the optometrist with patient care and other assigned clinical support duties within the position’s training and responsibilities.
  • Clean and prepare examination rooms between patient visits in accordance with established protocols and infection control standards.
  • Assist with the maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies, restock examination rooms, and report equipment problems or supply shortages.
  • Maintain infection control standards when handling equipment, preparing patient care areas, and assisting with examinations and testing.
  • Provide backup support for optical and front desk responsibilities, including insurance eligibility verification, following cross-training and established procedures.
  • Assist with assessments, audits, and other reviews required by organizational or regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist with training newly employed staff as directed.
  • Maintain professional, cooperative relationships with patients, families, providers, supervisors, and other members of the care team.
  • Protect confidential patient and organizational information and comply with AccessHealth policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/SUPERVISION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience as a technician in an optometry setting
  • Paraoptometric (CPO), Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA), or Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) certification preferred but not required.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

  • Experience performing preliminary and ancillary optometric testing and using related equipment.
  • Strong customer service, written and verbal communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to use computers and patient record systems accurately and securely.
  • Experience supporting optical services, front desk functions, and insurance eligibility verification.
  • Ability to work with children and families and collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary care team.

PREFERRED

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Hours

Employees will be assigned to a regular 40-hours work schedule, which may include hours before 8:00 am, after 5:00 pm, and Saturdays as determined by department needs and requirements.
