Schedule: 8 to 10 hours / week – days of the week are flexible

Job Summary

The Optometrist provides part-time optometric services to individuals served by The Medical Center at Woods, including children and adults served by Woods System of Care and its affiliates, community members, and employees, as applicable. The Optometrist performs comprehensive vision examinations, analyzes results, diagnoses refractive and ocular conditions, prescribes corrective lenses and medications within the scope of practice, and provides treatment and follow-up care. The Optometrist is responsible for timely and accurate documentation of patient encounters in the electronic health record (EHR) and collaborates with primary care providers, specialists, families/guardians, residential teams, and other interdisciplinary team members to support coordinated care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive vision tests and examinations and analyzes results.
  • Diagnoses refractive errors, including nearsightedness and farsightedness, and identifies eye diseases and conditions such as glaucoma.
  • Prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, medications, and other appropriate treatments within the scope of practice and as permitted by Pennsylvania law.
  • Prescribes and fits corrective lenses and provides patient education regarding proper use, cleaning, and care of contact lenses.
  • Provides treatments such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation when clinically appropriate and within scope of practice.
  • Provides preoperative and postoperative eye care for patients undergoing eye surgery, including appropriate follow-up examinations.
  • Evaluates patients for ocular findings associated with systemic diseases, including diabetes, and refers patients to other health care providers or specialists as needed.
  • Promotes eye health through patient counseling, education, preventive care, and recommendations for maintaining optimal vision and ocular health.
  • Performs optometric procedures and treatment within professional scope and applicable Pennsylvania law.
  • Documents all patient encounters, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, prescriptions, referrals, and follow-up plans accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic health record.
  • Coordinates referrals and follow-up care with Medical Center providers, specialists, families/guardians, residential teams, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team as appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with the Medical Director, Health Center Leadership, and their designees to comply with the Medical Center’s policies related to clinical care, billing, credentialing, and reporting.
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, professional standards, and applicable requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and Medical Center policies.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, organized clinical workspace and ensures ophthalmic equipment is used and maintained appropriately.

  • Proficiency in the use of ophthalmic examination equipment and electronic health record technology.

  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based optometric care, research, and treatment techniques.

Qualifications

Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry school required. Minimum of two years of experience working as a practicing optometrist required. Experience prescribing and fitting corrective lenses and evaluating and treating eye injuries and diseases required. Experience working with vulnerable populations and individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, or other complex health care needs is preferred.

Required:

  • Current, unrestricted Pennsylvania optometry license, valid and in good standing.
  • Solid working knowledge of ophthalmic examination equipment and diagnostic tools required to conduct comprehensive examinations.
  • Current clinical knowledge of testing, diagnosis, treatment, and referral standards for eye injuries, refractive disorders, and ocular diseases.
  • Demonstrated experience prescribing and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Ability to meet all Medical Center credentialing, onboarding, and applicable payer enrollment requirements.
  • Required State and Federal clearances.

Ability to lift 50 lbs.
