Work Schedule

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds Community College is seeking a part-time Opticianry Clinical Instructor.

This position is responsible for supporting course delivery and assisting students understand course material and build the technical skills necessary for certification and/or licensure. The role includes, but is not limited to the following duties:

  • Provide clinical instruction for students enrolled in laboratory, dispensing, or contact lens courses as assigned.
  • Assembly and disassembly of course supply kits for distance clinical students.
  • Proctor skill-based assessments, midterm and final exams aligned with OPT curriculum.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide feedback to support mastery of skills.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student competencies.
  • Provide student support and tutoring as needed to reinforce course content or preparation for state licensing exams.
  • Ensure compliance with COA accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with program faculty to support student success.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Current state optician license, ABO and/or NCLE certification
  • Two years of industry experience in an optical dispensing setting
  • Strong knowledge of opticianry course content
  • Effective instructional and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student learning and provide constructive feedback
  • Familiarity with opticianry state licensure regulations
  • Professionalism and a commitment to student-centered instruction


Additional Considerations
  • Teaching or optical industry training experience
  • Experience teaching via a wide variety educational modalities, such as in-person, live video, or asynchronous modes.
