Job Description

Department: UHC: Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmic Photographer performs visual field testing, IOL Master, Pentacam, OCT, refractometry. Has knowledge of retinoscopy, slit lamp tonometry, A-Scans, calculating A-Scan lenses, B-Scans, fundus photos, fluorescein angiography, slit lamp photography, processing and archiving of photos, external photos, visual acuity, potential acuity meter, and brightness acuity test. Must have ability to work with patient's insurance coverage, knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, telephone etiquette, automatic and manual lensometry, keratometry, preparing patients for special testing, photography archiving systems, research protocol photography, and computerized medical records. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in related field preferred. Minimum one-year ophthalmic photography preferred. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level competency experience required within 90 days of hire.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of Ophthalmic and medical terminology knowledge required. Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, the pharmacological properties of Mydriatic drops, injectable agents and their effect on the eye and the physiological responses that may occur. Ability to check pupil condition and iris response and record findings. Basic knowledge of surgical procedures, pharmacology and specific treatments for common disease entities as well as good communication skills. Knowledge of basic systems review, medications taken (to include times and dosages). Ability to discern history of present ophthalmic problem and need for surgery. Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy and location, retinal function and neurological responses from the brain for optimum imaging. Able to keyboard 40 wpm. Able to use a computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate and accept direction. Able to think critically; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.

Licensures and Certifications: Valid California Driver's license required. Ophthalmic Photographer's Society Membership preferred.
