Job Description

BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength and we want our people to be safe, successful and well. We’re leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We’re proud of brands, like COLORBOND ® steel that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.

The Opportunity

BlueScope Building Components is looking for a full-time, permanent Mobile Mill Technician to join the National Operations and Supply Chain team based in Gillman, South Australia. BlueScope Building Components, a division of BlueScope in Australia, manufactures and markets steel building products, solutions and services through its four leading brands: Lysaght, Fielders, Ranbuild and Kiteleys.

Looking for something a little different from your typical manufacturing role?

Our Mobile Mill travels to customer and construction sites across Australia, enabling us to manufacture long-length steel roofing products directly on site for major industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects.

As part of an experienced team, you’ll combine hands-on equipment operation, maintenance and problem-solving with travel and customer interaction, while building your knowledge of our specialised Mobile Mill equipment.

Our Mobile Mill has supported some impressive projects across Australia, including the Sydney Cricket Ground, Qantas Founders Museum and Goodwood Oval redevelopment.

What Will You Do?

You’ll work as part of the Mobile Mill team to deliver projects at customer and construction sites across Australia, supporting each project from set-up through to pack-down.

You’ll be involved in:

  • setting up and operating the Mobile Mill and associated equipment
  • preparing equipment and coordinating coil deliveries for production
  • manufacturing long-length steel roofing products on customer sites
  • carrying out quality checks throughout production
  • completing routine maintenance and basic mechanical adjustments
  • troubleshooting equipment and production issues to keep projects moving
  • packing down equipment at the completion of each project
  • working safely across a variety of customer and construction environments
  • building positive relationships with customers, builders and installers.

You’ll also spend time working directly with customers and site contacts, so being comfortable communicating with different people and working together to resolve issues will be an important part of the role.

About the Travel

Travel is an important part of this role, with opportunities to work on projects across Australia.

Travel requirements will vary depending on project activity, with busier and quieter periods throughout the year. You’ll travel as part of the Mobile Mill team, with the length of each trip depending on the project.

When you’re not travelling, you’ll be based at our Gillman site, generally working Monday to Friday, 6:30 am - 2:30 pm.

All required business travel, accommodation and approved expenses are covered by BlueScope.

More About You

You’ll be a hands-on and practical person who enjoys problem-solving and working in a varied environment.

You’ll bring:

  • experience in a production, manufacturing or similar hands-on environment
  • good mechanical aptitude, with some basic fitting/mechanical knowledge
  • troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • good communication skills and confidence dealing with customers
  • a strong focus on safety and quality
  • a mechanical or electrical trade background would be advantageous, but is not essential
  • flexibility and willingness to travel across Australia
  • the ability to obtain a ‘Police Clearance in all Australian states/territories’ and ‘Working with children clearance in all Australian states/territories’
  • a current construction industry White Card and forklift license or the ability and willingness to obtain them.

What’s in it for you?

This is a great opportunity if you’re looking for something beyond a traditional factory-based role. You’ll have the chance to:

  • work on a variety of projects and sites across Australia
  • develop your skills working with specialised Mobile Mill equipment, with training provided
  • combine hands-on operational and mechanical work with travel and customer interaction
  • work as part of a small, experienced team
  • build your troubleshooting and technical capability across different environments
  • see the products you manufacture become part of some impressive Australian projects.

If you enjoy variety, like solving problems and want a role that can take you beyond the same workplace every day, we’d love to hear from you.
