About the Position

The Operator Technician Trainee participates in a structured training and qualification program to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate equipment and processes within the Butyl Polymerization Recycle and Halogenation operating areas.

Working as part of the Operations team, the trainee learns to monitor, operate, and troubleshoot chemical manufacturing systems while following established safety, environmental, operating, and quality procedures. The position supports safe and reliable production while developing the competencies required to progress into a fully qualified Operator Technician role.

The position is located in Sarnia, will report to the First Line Shift Supervisor, and is responsible for ensuring operating assignments are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established work practices and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participate in a structured training and qualification program to develop the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified Operator Technician.
• Learn to safely operate, monitor and troubleshoot chemical manufacturing processes and equipment within the Butyl operating areas.
• Monitor process conditions, equipment performance, alarms and control systems to support safe, efficient and reliable production.
• Perform routine equipment inspections, operating rounds, process sampling, quality checks and data recording.
• Assist with equipment preparation, hazardous energy control, lockout and tagout activities, maintenance work and process troubleshooting in accordance with training and established procedures.
• Assist with the safe loading, unloading, transfer and storage of raw materials and chemicals, including deliveries by truck, tanker or railcar.
• Maintain accurate operating records and communicate process, production and equipment information to Operator Technicians, supervisors and other support personnel.
• Respond to alarms, equipment concerns and abnormal operating conditions, and promptly report issues to the appropriate supervisor.
• Follow all company safety, environmental, operating and quality procedures, including the proper use of required personal protective equipment.
• Maintain a safe, clean and environmentally responsible work area by completing required inspections, checklists and general housekeeping activities.
• Participate in required training, safety meetings, operational meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of a Chemical Production and Power Engineering Technology program or an equivalent recognized chemical or process operations program.
• Fourth Class Operating Engineer Certificate issued by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority is preferred.
• Previous experience in a chemical, petrochemical, refinery, manufacturing or industrial environment is considered an asset.
• Strong commitment to safety, environmental responsibility and operational excellence.
• Demonstrated technical and mechanical aptitude with the ability to learn chemical manufacturing processes and process-control systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong teamwork, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Self-motivated, adaptable and willing to learn and perform a variety of operating responsibilities.
• Ability to follow detailed procedures, maintain accurate records and communicate process or equipment concerns.
• Ability to work safely and effectively both independently and as part of a shift team.
• Ability and willingness to work a rotating shift schedule, including days, nights, weekends and statutory holidays.
• Ability to meet the physical, environmental, sensory and mental demands of an industrial operating position.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required site and job-specific training, certifications and qualifications, including WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, hazardous energy control and mobile equipment certifications.
• Canadian work experience is not required. Equivalent education, training, skills and relevant experience obtained outside Canada will be considered.

Expected Compensation:

$48.38 per hour, plus applicable shift premiums and other payments in accordance with the collective agreement.
