The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring that the safe, compliant, and efficient handling and movement of chemicals are at the core of all daily operations both within our own facilities and across customer sites. This role combines strong operational leadership with rigorous regulatory oversight of chemical storage, handling, and transportation, while driving continuous improvement and maintaining a high level of commercial awareness. The objective is to maximise profitability without compromising the highest standards of environmental protection, process safety, and chemical risk management.

Key Responsibilities


Health, Safety, Environment & Compliance

  • Maintain full compliance with environmental permits, waste regulations, and industry standards.
  • Champion a strong safety culture and ensure all staff follow safe systems of work.
  • Oversee waste acceptance procedures and documentation for traceability.
  • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions

Processing Operations

  • Lead operational staff and daily operations of the Hazardous Collections & Transfer team.
  • Oversee daily facility operations, including waste reception, processing, storage, and dispatch to local and international outlets.
  • Ensure efficient use of equipment, labour, and site resources.
  • Coordinate scheduling of inbound and outbound waste streams.

People Leadership

  • Manage, train, and develop plant operators and support staff within the team.
  • Plan staffing levels and resource allocation to meet operational targets in the wash plant.
  • Lead toolbox talks, performance reviews and competency assessments.

Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Oversee the loading, unloading, and transfer of chemical materials, ensuring all activities meet regulatory and safety requirements
  • Maintain accurate documentation and tracking for the transportation and movement of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals
  • Coordinate with logistics teams and approved carriers to ensure compliant off-site transportation of chemicals to customer or disposal locations
  • Ensure proper labelling, segregation, and packaging of chemical materials in line with regulatory standards
  • Monitor and enforce procedures for the safe handling of chemicals to minimise risk to personnel, the environment, and assets
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and lower operating costs.
  • Implement best practices and standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor KPIs and drive performance improvements.
  • Manage budgets, control costs, and support profitability targets.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Chemical Engineering Qualification or Chemistry background.
  • DGSA qualification, Waste Classification or knowledge of the carriage of dangerous good by road.
  • Hazardous Waste Experience.
  • Strong Health and Safety Experience.
  • Strong IT Capabilities, Word, Excel, ERP and Finance package.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate and develop teams.
  • Commercial ability with exposure to pricing and profitability.
  • Experience with ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 450001.
  • Decisive, proactive, and solutions‑focused
  • Strong communicator with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.


Desirable

  • IOSH/NEBOSH certification or equivalent.
  • Experience with ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 450001
