What’s the role

Shell Trading provides a comprehensive portfolio of products and services associated with crude oil, refined products, natural gas, electrical power, chemicals, and Freight trading based in the UK, US, Singapore, Netherlands, Bahamas, and United Arab Emirates. The purpose of this position is to lead the Global Derivatives team as a leader of the community.

The Trading Settlements processes are complex, risk exposed due to ever changing regulatory environment and often time critical. The critical processes and complex system landscape often demands to work in close co-operation with different teams (Traders, Operations, FIB, Tax, Planning & Reporting, Financial accounting, Process Expert etc.) within the Trading business and across various Trading locations.

Finance Operations processes transactions worth billions of dollars with third parties for Trading and hence poor process performance would have a significant impact on Group profitability, cash flow and reputation. Trading also has significant transaction numbers and value with Group Companies, and hence suboptimal process performance can create significant issues between Trading and other Group Companies. Additionally, the Finance Operations team will need to provide top quartile support for the future growth needs of what is a vibrant and continually developing Trading business.

Additionally, a key aspect of the role will be to manage and develop a maturing organization. This will include staff and position planning and further work on building business and process knowledge to underpin the ongoing operations. In addition, there are numerous new business opportunities / entities that are being set up and FO TS support to these new businesses is seen as a critical piece. In summary, the role provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to quickly gain knowledge of a fast-moving and exciting business, to gain leadership experience, and of managing operations that are progressing towards top quartile performance.

What you’ll be doing

The purpose of this position is to be the Operations Manager Global Derivatives (ERA) and lead a team of finance professional who operates various processes in Derivates (ETD and OTC segments) for all regions. The teams include Global Exchange Traded Derivatives who operates various process that cover Live trade reconciliation, T+1 reconciliation, Trade book to financial reconciliations for dry segments, VM/ IM settlements. The processes also cover reconciliations for all entities handling business segments such as Crude, Products, Gas, Power and Emissions, collateral margining, execution and exchange brokerage/ fees payments, VM-MTM netting, month end reconciliation for clearing brokers and accompanied financial disclosures, and inter-group balancing.


This role will lead a team that is accountable to deliver accurate and timely Trade book to financial reconciliation for paper derivatives (Global), insightful analysis and management information for month end and quarter close financial transactions for derivatives to the controller’s organization and Finance in Business and ensure operational effectiveness of underlying controls (RDS KS/ KNS). The incumbent is also expected to play an active role in major transformational projects along with driving digital initiatives brining efficiencies and improvements to simplify processes and maintain a healthy business stakeholder interface.

The role works closely with stakeholders globally including Trading Commercial and Operations teams, Market Risk, Finance in the Business, IT, Technical & Derivative Accounting, and other business partners to ensure the process deliver top quartile performance.

Accountabilities:

  • Robust Planning and timely delivery of TB2F on a MoM and ensure adherence to underlying Controls
  • Monitor Live Exchange Trade reconciliation via Clear vision and ensure to highlight relevant traders immediately and follow-up without any time delay for resolution.
  • Monitor Exchange trade activity and liaise with key stakeholders to ensure accurate recording of transactions.
  • Monitor daily reconciliations of all Exchange Traded Derivative (ETD) activities performed by the team members.
  • Ensure all ETD derivatives settlements and brokerage payments are made correctly and on a timely basis.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationship with key stakeholders to influence feeder process discipline critical for performance delivery and to deepen business understanding
  • Ensure effective tracking of KPI for both processes and ensure right intervention
  • Continuously looks for opportunities to make the process efficient and effective
  • Effectively develop staff by having frequent development conversations and finding ways to close development gaps
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies for stock valuation, VM/MTM Netting, Derivatives and 20F disclosures
  • Manage and lead cross-functional initiatives

What you bring

  • Preferred Certifications - Professional degree in a finance related discipline (with preference for qualification and/or certification like CA, CIMA, MBA, etc.)
  • 12+ years of relevant professional experience
  • In depth knowledge in Derivatives Trading operations, Settlements and Trade book to financials and underlying ETRM, SAP and ENDUR (variants)
  • Understand Trading Operations and underlying value drivers
  • Participating in cross-functional initiatives or projects while continuing to manage current workload
  • Proven ability to deliver quality results under significant time pressure and tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal & leadership skills with personal confidence to quickly build credibility, respect and rapport.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate complex raw data into simple, powerful and easy to communicate key messages & insights
  • Strong performance management skills to hold the team, stakeholders, and the business accountable
  • This position requires a blend of extensive understanding of accounting concepts/principles and strong analytical/problem solving skills

Additional Information:

  • The team works across various time zones and hence the successful candidate must be flexible to accommodate time zones during critical month close/ quarter periods and for meeting specific deadlines.
  • Must have capacity to develop a deep understanding of Derivatives, drivers and linkages to T&S business goals.
  • Incumbent is expected to bring controllership mindset to challenge the status quo, able to perform deep dive analysis and keep tight checks on any leakages.
  • Incumbent is also expected to contribute on key transformational Projects by providing accurate and timely inputs on design, UAT and go-live phases.
  • Ability to interface with multiple disciplines and organizations across Trading organisation.
