Job Description

Job Purpose:
Responsibility for the Operations activities on site. These includes Production (approx. 70 people), Warehousing (approx.10 people and two locations) and Maintenance/Engineering (approx. 7 people) on shift patterns that flex from the standard 24/5 to 24/6 and sometimes 24/7 working.
In this role you are responsible for the end to end manufacturing of Probiotic products here on site and this includes all facets relating to the Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost of the products involved.

Main Responsibilities:

Drive the following aspects across the three functional areas:

  • People: Manage, motivate, and develop the team to ensure high performance and professional growth. Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement. Look at all areas from reward & recognition, mentoring, training, development and talent management. Make sure we have the right manpower to run/maintain the site assets (capsuling, tabletting, blistering, sachet, syringe filling/labelling and boxing machines)/utilities (compressed air, purified water, gas and electric) across the different buildings/locations and the 24/5 (sometimes 24/6 and 24/7) working patterns.
  • Safety (Health & Environment): Ensure the areas operate in compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations and look to keep improving safety culture and employee participation.
  • Quality: Ensure all activities are complaint to the required quality standards i.e. cGMP/BSI/FSSC/FEMAS/UFAS/NOPS, guidelines, work on improving quality/food safety culture. Make sure the departments are owning and driving the quality activities i.e. RCA, deviation management, MOC, risk assessment, document updates and review etc.
  • Delivery: Drive/champion Performance Excellence looking for opportunities to improve process/line/utility efficiency (throughput, yield, wastage, OEE, breakdowns, cost of poor quality, methodology etc). Ensure products are delivered to internal/external customers On Time and In Full (OTIF).
  • Cost: Prepare, monitor and look to make savings in the yearly department budgets. Drive the yearly ambition to reduce costs be it in our manufacturing costs or via material usage variances.


Be an advocate for getting on the GEMBA to engage and support the teams. Drive the Daily Operation Meeting (DOM) coordinating activities to resolves issues as they arise.

Along with the other functional managers help build the site master plan and participate fully in the management of the site, including all actions within and outside of the individual’s basic remit which impact on the reputation, integrity, performance and profitability of the Somerset site.

Production:

  • Oversee the production activities across the two production buildings and differing shifts. As part of the role you will need to spend time with the late/night shifts on frequency that allows them to feel engaged and supported.
  • Make the shift in production from being told what to do to proactively owning what goes on i.e. stop the reliance on quality to be told what to do to proactively validating production proposals.
  • Work closely with the material/production planning teams to ensure lines are run at maximum efficiency running where possible in campaigns to reduce change overs and unwanted downtime.
  • Track, monitor and improve on line KPIs so as to reduce inefficiencies and identify issues proactively rather than reactively.
  • Ensure data entered into the various tools i.e. IFS is done timely and accurately.

Warehousing:

  • Co-ordinate the activities across the two warehouses (Lopen/Bridgwater).
  • Make sure we have sufficient storage to manage the site needs.
  • Ensure the raw materials are stored safely and in the correct way and at the right temperature/humidity.
  • Look to reduce picking errors as needed and make sure we have the right picking strategies to both get the raw materials to the departments on time and when sending Final Products to the customer also.
  • Final Product collections vary significantly depending whether it’s made to stock or made to order so a flexible working approaches will need to be supervised carefully.
  • Makes sure yearly inventory checks are led and completed accurately.


Engineering/Maintenance:

  • Oversee the running/maintenance of site assets (as above) and across the 3 shift patterns flexing over weekends as needed.
  • Ensure we have enough cover to support the various working patterns including managing ‘out of hours’ call outs to site for critical equipment alarms or breakdowns.
  • Drive the maintenance/engineering strategy for the site transitioning from reactive "break-fix" repairs to a proactive model.
  • Coordinate/supervise contractor management on site i.e. site alignment of works to be done, RAMs, permit to work completion for each activity.
  • Help build the yearly CAPEX investment plan (and support the implementation) with the other site stakeholders.


Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent organisation skills, attention to detail, accuracy and precision
  • Excellent communication and IT skills
  • Demonstrate a positive “can do” attitude and change management orientated individual


Education & Experience:

  • At least 10 years’ experience in manufacturing, preferably in food or pharma.
  • Ideally candidates will have worked within a GMP regulated facility.
  • Ideally the candidates will be familiar with ISO9001, FSSC 22000, UFAS, FEMAS and NOPS regulations.
  • Lean six sigma experience would be ideal.
  • Experience with different software tool like IFS/SAP, Qlik, Microsoft (packages) also desirable.
