Job Description
The Operations & Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of the Signal Hill Plant. The role supports day-to-day plant operations, monitors equipment performance, performs routine inspection and maintenance activities, responds to operating conditions, and helps maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and reliability requirements.
Responsibilities
- Monitor control panels, DCS screens, meters, local gauges, alarms, and plant equipment to confirm safe and reliable operation.
- Control plant output as directed, including load adjustments, turbine shutdowns, plant shutdowns, and synchronization to the grid when required.
- Maintain timely oral and electronic communications with the Qualified Scheduling Entity or other dispatch/control counterpart, including heightened communication during emergency or abnormal operating conditions.
- Perform outside operator/rover duties, including rounds, equipment checks, readings, housekeeping observations, and identification of unsafe or abnormal conditions.
- Assist with preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on turbines, HRSGs, balance-of-plant equipment, water treatment systems, auxiliary systems, valves, pumps, motors, and related equipment.
- Perform water and steam system testing, maintain proper treatment residuals, and escalate conditions that could create scale, corrosion, or equipment reliability issues.
- Maintain accurate control-room logs, rover logs, DCS-generated logs, maintenance records, PM records, testing records, and repair documentation.
- Support compliance with air permit, wastewater discharge, safety, environmental, and applicable reliability requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability, safety, efficiency, and maintainability, and communicate recommendations to supervision.
- Participate in outage work, equipment isolation, lockout/tagout, startup and shutdown activities, and emergency response drills as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree, military technical training, power plant technician certification, or equivalent industrial experience preferred.1
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, P&IDs, blueprints, schematics, operating procedures, and maintenance documentation.
- Working knowledge of combustion turbine, steam cycle, cooling water, demineralizer, water treatment, natural gas/LP, electrical, and balance-of-plant systems.
- Ability to monitor turbine panels, DCS displays, alarms, trends, and local instrumentation.
- Basic computer skills, including ability to enter data, complete logs, use email, and work within maintenance or document-control systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, procedural compliance, environmental stewardship, teamwork, and clear communication.
- Follow all CCI and site safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work around mechanical systems, high-speed rotating equipment, high-pressure natural gas, high-pressure and high-temperature steam, electrical equipment, and hazardous chemicals.1
- Work in adverse temperatures, outdoor weather conditions, elevated areas, confined spaces, and noisy industrial environments while wearing required PPE.
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods; lift, bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, kneel, climb, grasp, push, pull, and perform strenuous work as required.
- Ability to lift objects up to 100 pounds, with appropriate assistance or mechanical aids where required by safe work practices.
- Position is expected to support a standard 40-hour work week, with flexibility for overtime, extended shifts, outage work, callouts, and peak demand periods.
