Job Description
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
The Boring Company is seeking a highly motivated and technically strong Operations Engineer to support tunneling operations through failure documentation, procedure development, operational data review, and cross-functional coordination. This role is best suited for someone with a test, reliability, or operations engineering mindset who can understand complex equipment behavior, communicate clearly, and drive consistency across machine operations.
As an Operations Engineer, you will help translate field issues into clear technical actions for engineering, operations, and maintenance teams. You will own and improve operating procedures, document downtime events and recurring failures, support root cause investigations, and help ensure operational knowledge is captured and applied across shifts and projects.
Responsibilities
- Document machine failures, downtime events, operational issues, and recurring trends in a clear, structured, and technically accurate manner.
- Own and maintain operating procedures, shift logs, failure reports, escalation paths, training materials, and other technical documentation used by operations and field personnel.
- Review operational data, event logs, operator feedback, and failure history to identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities to improve machine uptime and operating consistency.
- Partner with test, reliability, engineering, maintenance, and field operations teams to translate machine issues into actionable follow-ups, corrective actions, and procedure updates.
- Support root cause investigations by collecting relevant data, documenting timelines, organizing field observations, and ensuring lessons learned are captured.
- Standardize workflows, reporting templates, shift handoff processes, and operating protocols to improve execution and communication across teams.
- Spend time in the field or tunnel as needed to understand machine behavior, validate procedures, observe operations, and gather context from operators and technicians.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, systems engineering, test engineering, reliability engineering, operations engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience in test engineering, reliability engineering, operations engineering, field engineering, technical operations, or a similar role supporting complex equipment or systems.
- Strong ability to understand mechanical, electrical, controls, robotic, or industrial equipment systems at an operational level.
- Excellent technical writing skills, with the ability to create clear procedures, reports, logs, failure summaries, and operating documentation.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to review data, identify trends, and communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced operations environment where priorities can shift quickly.
- Experience with supply chain management and logistics is highly desirable.
