Job Description

As an Operating Room Nurse, you will provide goal-directed nursing care that is individualized to the needs of patients and families during health and illness.

In this role, you will provide nursing care based on professional knowledge, clinical judgment, and standards of practice that support the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Each professional nurse assumes primary responsibility and accountability for all nursing care provided by themselves and those under their supervision while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient care.

Essential Job Functions

  • Utilize assessment skills to determine patient needs and provide comprehensive patient- and family-centered care for patients from neonate through geriatric populations.
  • Identify learning needs of patients and families and develop teaching strategies that promote recovery.
  • Implement nursing interventions based on the scheduled surgery, patient assessment, and developmental needs.
  • Evaluate patient care and modify nursing interventions as appropriate while documenting accurately in the medical record.
  • Successfully complete all unit-based and hospital competencies.
  • Perform nursing treatments and procedures according to hospital policy and specialty practice standards.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.
  • Prepare and administer medications and treatments safely according to physician orders.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to provide holistic patient care.
  • Document all aspects of patient care from admission through discharge.
  • Incorporate discharge planning into daily practice to promote smooth transitions of care.
  • Provide cost-effective care through appropriate use of supplies, time, and personnel.
  • Participate actively in unit staff meetings.
  • Assist in achieving unit goals and objectives.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, engagement, and staff retention.
  • Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities as assigned.
  • Supervise, direct, and teach staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement activities.
  • Participate in the preceptor program and assist with orientation of new staff.
  • Attend required weekly in-service education.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Associate Degree nurses must enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire and complete the BSN within thirty (30) months. UChicago Medicine provides 100% tuition reimbursement toward an accredited BSN program.
  • Current Illinois Registered Nurse license.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trauma nursing background.
  • One (1) or more years of surgical scrub experience.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
