The Clemson University Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (PCVM) is seeking applicants for several full-time positions to serve as Small Animal Educators. These faculty positions will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Clemson DVM curriculum (https://www.clemson.edu/veterinary-medicine/students/curriculum.html). The successful candidates will have a primary instructional role in developing and delivering small animal medicine and / or surgery content in the integrated Clemson DVM curriculum. These faculty members will teach with a dynamic, collaborative team consisting of experienced general practice clinicians, boarded specialists, and education specialists. The small animal medicine and surgery course series is designed to be an integrated, systems-based approach for conditions common to small animal general practice. This role is designed to attract outstanding educators and experienced clinicians who are passionate about teaching diagnostic medicine and small animal surgery in a practical, integrated fashion. Board certification in small animal internal medicine, small animal surgery, or ABVP certification is encouraged but not required.

The Clemson DVM curriculum is based upon integrative, collaborative team teaching in which faculty with varying backgrounds can work together to offer students an inclusive and innovative learning environment. The Small Animal Educators will collaborate with our other teaching faculty to facilitate vertical and horizontal integration for the delivery of core small animal internal medicine and surgery principles. Utilizing state of the art classrooms and teaching technology, this faculty member will be asked to adopt an integrated educational approach to provide students with a strong foundation of cognitive, clinical, and professional competencies in preparation for entry into the partially distributive model of clinical training in the fourth year. This position will consist primarily of didactic and small group instruction, along with some instruction in teaching laboratories. While the PCVM will not have a specialty referral hospital, it will have a fully staffed Community Practice as well as a robust Shelter Medicine spay-neuter program. The Small Animal Educators will work closely with the Community Practice and Shelter Medicine clinicians to integrate classroom concepts that translate seamlessly into real world experiences. A clinical service commitment is not required; however, interested individuals are encouraged to engage in teaching activities in our Community Practice. Additionally, these faculty members will engage in scholarly activity, which can include curriculum development, programmatic or curricular assessment, scholarship of teaching and learning, and other similar activities. Finally, a hybrid academic appointment will be considered for a boarded small animal specialist (internal medicine and / or surgery). If desired, this individual may seek a combination of a part-time academic appointment at Clemson while also having a part-time position in private referral practice. The possibility of a 9-month to 12-month contract are options that can be discussed with the Department Chair.

The PCVM is currently seeking accreditation by the American Veterinary Medicine Association-Council on Education to offer the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to approximately 80 students per cohort which started in August 2026). The PCVM plans to utilize a partial distributive model of clinical training for students. Its brand-new state of the art campus will reside in Pendleton, SC, near the T. Ed Garrison Arena, will house research and teaching labs, and utilize both ambulatory services as well as teaching sites at the Clemson University Equine Center, Lamaster Dairy Cattle Center, and other locations for education in the field.

Overview of the Position

Reporting to the Department Chair and working closely with the Foundational Sciences and Clinical Skills Leads, the small animal medicine educator will:

• Create and deliver the small animal content in the team-taught systems-based courses in the curriculum.
• Participate in teaching laboratories as agreed upon with colleagues and the department chair
• Develop assessment strategies in alignment with the overall competency-based curriculum.
• Collaborate with other faculty members to ensure integration of knowledge and skills across years and courses.
• Actively and effectively engage in student-centered instruction, coaching, and mentorship.
• Collaborate closely with the Clemson University Community Practice and with our partner clinics.
• Serve on PCVM and campus committees as an appointed or elected member.

Additionally, the faculty member must have the ability to:

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent with 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Applicants must demonstrate a strong foundation in small animal practice and the ability to teach clinical skills to veterinary students in classroom and laboratory/skills settings
• Board certification is not required; board-eligible/board-certified candidates are encouraged to apply.
• Commitment to excellence and creativity in education.
• Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in South Carolina and ability to obtain a DEA license.

Preferred qualifications include:

• 5+ years of relevant experience in veterinary medicine or education.
• Experience in clinical skills education, simulation pedagogy, and/or competency-based assessment.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring learners (students, interns, residents, or technicians).
• Board certification or residency training in small animal medicine (ACVIM, ECVIM), small animal surgery (ACVS, ECVS) or American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).
