Job Description

The Division of Math and Natural Sciences in the College of Innovation & Technology (CIT) at the University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank.

Candidates with experience including, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Bioengineering including metabolic engineering, molecular engineering, systems engineering, and community engineering
  • Omics analysis with an emphasis in areas such as lipidomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and systems biology
  • Interdisciplinary expertise in molecular biology, cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or chemical analysis
  • Experience with mass spectrometry molecular characterization and/or biomanufacturing/fermentation and research ambitions that can overlap with other areas of specialization included in this posting.

The College of Innovation & Technology continues to develop strong ties with regional industries leading to applied research and experiential learning opportunities. Therefore, the candidates will be encouraged to collaborate with others to create new programs and certificates within the College, to prepare students for the workforce of the future. Startup packages for the successful candidates include generous funding, lab space, access to equipment across CIT, and reassignment of teaching.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses and potentially graduate courses, mentor undergraduate and masters students, develop externally funded research program(s), and publish in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Candidates are expected to possess the knowledge, drive, and innovative spirit that will continue CIT on a trajectory to be recognized as one of the best in the country.

Qualifications

Applicants of all ranks require a Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Bioengineering or a related field by the appointment date.

Applicants must show potential for developing and maintaining a self-sustaining research program as evidenced through metrics including, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, grant submissions/awards, and research presentations.

Applicants at the rank of tenured Associate and Full Professor must have academic experience demonstrating excellent teaching in experiential settings and a strong scholarship record, with a history of successful grant writing.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Bioengineering, or related field
  • Record of teaching excellence in modalities that may include face-to-face, online, and experiential settings commensurate with desired rank
  • Record of research and scholarly publications commensurate with desired rank
  • Record of leadership and mentorship commensurate with desired rank

Associate or Full Tenure-Track Professor candidates will undergo the college review process for tenure upon hire.

Tenure is contingent upon the University of Michigan Board of Regents approval.

Modes of Work

Hybrid:

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes here
