The Department of Materials at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for substantiation-track faculty positions at all ranks, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. We seek outstanding scholars whose research advances the multidisciplinary frontiers of materials science, engineering, and intelligence

Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

• Materials for health and biomedicine
• Materials for energy and information
• Sustainable materials for terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments
• Advanced materials modeling and characterization
• AI-empowered and autonomous materials synthesis and discovery

The Department aspires to become an impact-driven, interdisciplinary hub for materials innovation, advancing the discovery, development, and translation of cutting-edge materials technologies in health, energy, information, and sustainability while addressing pressing global challenges and strategic national priorities.

Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the Department’s mission by:

• Educating and nurturing future leaders through rigorous, interdisciplinary teaching, mentoring, and research experiences that provide students with a strong foundation in materials science, engineering, and intelligence.
• Conducting cutting-edge and transformative research that addresses major scientific, technological, and societal challenges in areas such as biomedical and health technologies, energy and information, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability.
• Advancing innovation and entrepreneurship by translating fundamental discoveries into technologies and commercial applications, mentoring students and researchers in innovation, and contributing to economic development, societal well-being, and strategic technological advancement.
• Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across materials science, engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and related disciplines within HKUST and with academic, industrial, and governmental partners.

The Department will offer a comprehensive portfolio of academic programs at the BSc, MSc, MPhil, and PhD levels, providing faculty members with opportunities to develop innovative curricula, establish world-class research programs, and mentor the next generation of materials scientists and engineers.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry, or a closely related engineering field. Successful candidates are expected to develop strong, independent, and innovative externally funded research programs; teach effectively in MSEI and related courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and actively participate in service to the Department, School, and University.
