The Department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for the James Stephen Swinehart, PhD, Endowed Professorship in Organic Chemistry. This open-rank search welcomes candidates at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor levels for a tenure-track or tenured appointment. Rank and tenure status will reflect the candidate’s qualifications and experience, subject to university review. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027.
We seek outstanding scholars whose research advances Chemical Biology and/or Energy and Materials, the department’s two major research areas. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, chemical approaches to understanding and controlling biological processes; molecular probes and therapeutics; biomaterials; functional molecules and polymers; catalysis and sustainable chemistry; and materials for energy conversion and storage. Candidates working in either area, or at their intersection, are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will develop or sustain an independent, externally supported research program with international impact, mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers, and contribute to departmental and university service. A central responsibility of this endowed professorship is contributing to the undergraduate and graduate organic chemistry curriculum. Candidates must be qualified to teach undergraduate organic chemistry and demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching and student learning.
CWRU offers opportunities for collaboration across the College of Arts and Sciences, Case School of Engineering, and School of Medicine, as well as with regional research institutions including the Cleveland Clinic. This position will complement interdisciplinary research in molecular therapeutics, advanced materials, and energy science within CWRU’s new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB), creating opportunities for collaboration across chemistry, engineering, and medicine. The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $90,000-$175,000. The starting salary will depend on rank at appointment, scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. A PhD in chemistry or a closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment. Research accomplishments, teaching preparation, and mentoring experience will be evaluated in relation to career stage.
