Job Description

Job Title: Oncology Referral Specialist
Department: Oncology
Location: Lipson Cancer Institute - St Mary's

Address: 55 Genesee Street, Rochester
Hours Per Week: 40
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm


The Oncology Referral Specialist will act as an initial contact for patients, family, community members, and referral sources for cancer center patients or patients at a high risk for cancer. Coordinate with administration systems, processes and procedures in the health system to ensure appropriate evaluation, care and referrals. The referral specialist will focus on patient centered referral process at the cancer center by following all active referrals and ensuring patients are seen in a timely fashion. The specialist will be responsible to process, track and obtain authorization for all incoming and outgoing referrals.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide telephone and in person screening and initial contact with referral sources and potential patients.
• Coordinates the intake and referral process, determines priority needs for assessment
• Provides coordination of testing to be performed with physician, patient, facility and payer. This includes reviewing medical documents for clarity, ensuring all necessary clinical steps have been taken; works with necessary parties to obtain third-party approval
• Obtains all procedure and diagnosis codes to properly authorize/pre-certify ordered testing.
• Refers self-pay and out-of-network patients to the appropriate resource to help with payment.
• Complete pre-certification/authorization with the patient’s insurance company providing any necessary documentation.
• Document authorization/pre-certification once received along with contact information of the person spoken with.
• Contacts the patients and notifies them of the scheduled procedure and all necessary instructions.
• Actively monitor the attendance of and follow-up of referred appointments
• Monitor statistics and volume of patients testing and physician appointments
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Required - 3 years of experience in a health care setting.

  • Ability to Undertake a variety of diverse tasks and work in a multidisciplinary team.

  • Ability to think and work independently and with direction, and communicate with staff members in a fast- paced environment.

  • Top candidate will have previous Medical Office experience

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
