Oncology Call Center Registered Nurse - TGH Nursing Services - (260003Q3)
Under general supervision, following established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines, provides care to patients by triaging oncology patient calls regarding treatment, surgery and appointment information. Provides patient education and clinical direction by answering questions regarding their plan of care or any new concerns related but not limited to chemotherapy, radiation, infusion treatments, and surgery. Plans and documents nursing assessments, identifies and reports situations requiring further intervention, formulates and communicates goal-directed plan of care, and assures patient rights. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital and principles of quality improvementWhat you will doReceive and triage oncology patient calls related to symptoms, treatment questions, surgery preparation/recovery, and appointment/treatment logistics.Perform focused nursing assessments by phone/virtual, including symptom characterization (onset, severity, associated factors), treatment timeline, risk factors, and home supports.Conduct follow-up outreach (as assigned) to reassess symptoms, reinforce education, ensure adherence, and close the loop on referrals/orders.Document nursing assessments, triage decisions, interventions, and patient education in the EHR accurately and within required timelines.Maintain compliance with policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, patient rights, and professional guidelines.Ensure closed-loop communication: document provider notifications, patient instructions, and outcomes/resolution.Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, acting as a clinical resource for symptom triage and patient education.Maintain required competencies, education, and certifications, and participate in ongoing oncology/triage professional development.
Education QualificationsBachelor’s Degree NursingLicenses and CertificationsRegistered NurseExperience QualificationsMinimum of 1 year of Oncology experience (inpatient or outpatient)Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of oncology diagnoses and treatment modalities (chemotherapy, immunotherapy/biotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, infusion therapies, surgery) and common side effects/toxicities.Knowledge of oncologic emergencies and “red flag” symptoms (e.g., febrile neutropenia, tumor lysis syndrome, spinal cord compression, severe dehydration, uncontrolled pain, altered mental status) and appropriate escalation pathways.Knowledge of symptom management standards for nausea/vomiting, mucositis, fatigue, diarrhea/constipation, neuropathy, skin reactions, pain, and psychosocial distress.Knowledge of infection prevention principles and neutropenic precautions, as well as patient counseling for home safety and monitoring.Knowledge of professional practice standards for nursing assessment, documentation, privacy/confidentiality, informed consent support, and patient rights.Skill in telephonic/virtual triage using structured assessment frameworks to determine urgency, risk, and disposition (self-care advice vs. same-day visit vs. ED/911).Ability to synthesize complex information quickly (treatment regimen, labs, recent visits, comorbidities, social factors) to make safe, timely decisions.Skill in recognizing subtle deterioration and differentiating expected treatment effects from complications that require immediate intervention.Ability to coordinate communication across disciplines (oncology providers, infusion, radiation oncology, surgery, navigation, pharmacy, social work).Skill in therapeutic communication with patients/families experiencing anxiety, distress, or symptom burden.
