Your opportunity:

As the On Train Electrical Technician / On Train Electrician (internally known as Onboard Services Technician), you’ll play a critical role in keeping Queensland Rail’s iconic long-distance services running safely and reliably. You’ll maintain and troubleshoot onboard service equipment—working hands on to resolve faults, maintain power systems, and ensure passengers receive a high quality travel experience.


Based at Platform 10, Roma Street, you’ll primarily work onboard the Spirit of the Outback (Brisbane–Longreach) and the Westlander (Brisbane–Charleville), travelling across regional Queensland and being away for up to four days at a time.

You’ll join a small, experienced team of technicians—however, when onboard, you’ll work independently, so confidence, initiative and strong fault finding skills are essential.


Roster and Work Environment:

• Permanent full-time position
• Rosters typically provided one week in advance – flexibility is required with the roster
• 24/7 rotating operation where you will be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekend, public holidays and overnight travel on a rotating roster
• When not working on board the train you will be given training so that you can assist with Passenger Attendant duties (customer service, checking tickets) onboard or Station Assistant duties (customer service, general cleaning duties) at Platform 10 Roma Street.

• Base annual salary from $95,000 (including electrical allowance) + 12.75% super with potential to earn up to $140,000 per year + 12.75% super (including allowances)

About the role:


• Maintain and monitor onboard equipment including air conditioning, lighting, water and catering equipment
• Manage the power car and train electrical supply safely and compliantly
• Diagnose, troubleshoot and rectify equipment faults in service
• Monitor train cleanliness and equipment performance, taking immediate corrective action
• Document and report faults accurately
• Provide electrical supply connections at depots
• Assist with passenger baggage handling when required
• Support onboard customer service or station duties when not rostered as a technician

We are seeking to connect with someone who ideally has:


• The ability to work autonomously while contributing to a broader team
• Experience diagnosing and repairing transport air-conditioning and diesel-powered electrical generation systems
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
• Safety-focused mindset with excellent situational awareness
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• Resilience, adaptability and the ability to respond to the unexpected


Mandatory qualification:


• Electric Fitter and Mechanic Licence


Candidates will also need to hold or be willing to obtain the below certificates prior to employment:


• Advanced resuscitation
• Provide basic emergency life support
• CPR
• First Aid
• Low voltage rescue
