The Office of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (OMMIR) was established in 2022 through Senate Bill 22-150 and exists to serve as a liaison on behalf of the indigenous community on issues related to missing or murdered indigenous relatives. To achieve this goal, the unit conducts the following statewide activities:•Develops and enhances partnerships with Tribal Law Enforcement and communities;•Collaborates with any relevant entities, including the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs, federally recognized tribes, indigenous-led organizations, tribal and local law enforcement agencies, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Colorado State Patrol;•Staffing and support of the Community Volunteer Advisory Board;•Provides information to families on how to report a missing or murdered loved one;•Collaborates with state and local partners to develop training and education.•Helps connect families with resources;•Reporting out and responding to questions from the legislature and the general public.The Office of Liaison for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives is statutorily charged with serving as a liaison on behalf of the Indigenous community on issues related to missing or murdered Indigenous relatives, supporting the Advisory Board, and communicating with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation on homicide or missing persons investigations involving Indigenous victims, where appropriate, and providing assistance to families of victims. The office has established a community volunteer advisory board to identify and advise the office on various issues of concern. The office will collaborate with the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs; federally recognized Tribes; state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies; and Indigenous-led organizations.
The position will be a main point of contact from the Department to Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) partners. Problem solving, identifying and implementing solutions to improve communications and interactions between the Department and Tribal and AI/AN partners is a critical component of the job. This position is dedicated to working and communicating directly with the Tribes and AI/AN communities across the state, and maintaining a consistent presence in such communities to develop and enhance partnerships with Tribal law enforcement and communities. The position will develop strong relationships with the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs; federally recognized Tribes; state, local, and Tribal law enforcement agencies; and Indigenous-led organizations.
The position will coordinate with Tribal council members, other state and local offices including, but not limited to agency tribal liaisons, the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs, and county coroners to develop culturally responsive training and education on missing or murdered Indigenous person issues, and help ensure spiritual practices or ceremonies pertaining to the human remains of an Indigenous person are respected.
This is a fully operational professional position that must be able to identify and analyze sensitive issues and implement effective solutions. This position operates independently in performing work functions, and must possess a unique level of communication experience and talent. This position serves as a resource to others in the Department, the governor's office and other state agencies.
This position requires independent judgment and the ability to process and communicate complex information quickly, anticipate problems and devise solutions. The position must be able to navigate complex political dynamics relating to the Tribes and AI/AN communities while representing the Department. This position is a Staff Authority on Tribal and AI/AN relations and operates independently, working directly with the Tribes and AI/AN communities across the state.
The position develops strong relationships with the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs; federally recognized Tribes; state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies; and Indigenous-led organizations. The position coordinates with Tribal council members, other state and local offices including, but not limited to agency tribal liaisons, the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs.
This position represents the Department at the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs and any related subcommittees. The position facilitates and/or work with the Governor's office staff on the formal Tribal consultations and work to improve government-to-government relations between the Department and Tribes.
The position travels to and interface directly with Tribal and AI/AN community partners regarding implementation of Department policies. The position is the main point of contact for the Department to Tribal partners and AI/AN communities across the state. Problem solving, identifying and implementing solutions to improve communications between the Department and tribal partners is a critical component of the job.
This position works with law enforcement, district attorneys, and CDPS partners to conduct reviews of sentencing in cases of a violent or exploitative crime against an Indigenous person and work to potentially identify cases in which the perpetrator is a repeat offender.
This position establishes strong working relationships with decision-makers, community groups and organizations. Identifies key stakeholders both within and external to the state government needed to advance the priorities of Tribes and AI/AN communities. Facilitates all internal and external stakeholder committee and subcommittee meetings and solicits feedback on a variety of health and environmental initiatives impacting the Tribes and AI/AN communities. Educates local and state decision makers and community stakeholders on various needs related to relatives of missing and murdered Indigenous people. Will identify best practices to advise staff on decision-making and the efficacy of potential actions on the Tribes and AI/AN community. Must effectively communicate highly complex technical material and complex issues using language appropriate to experts and/or nonexperts.
