Position Purpose:

The Water Treatment Plant Operations Specialist (hereafter referred to as Operator) provides skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment, pumping and water supply facilities to provide high quality drinking water and to comply with federal and states laws, regulations and in compliance with SUEZ standards.

The work involves responsibility for the proper operation of the water treatment plant equipment, instrumentation including calibration, pumps, chemical feed systems, laboratory equipment, and all other pertinent equipment and devices necessary to ensure the compliant operation of the water system. The work is performed in accordance with oral and written instructions and with accepted water industry practices under the supervision of the Project Manager. Operators will fill the role of shift operator and as such are required to exercise a great deal of judgment and skill in the operation of the water treatment plant and supply facilities.

The Operator position is scheduled for various shifts to provide 24-hour 7 day per week coverage. Overtime may be required.

Operator position requires continuing training, seminars and classes to stay abreast of continuing developments in the Water Treatment field and to maintain certification, as well as mandatory attendance at company sponsored safety and operator development sessions.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate all unit processes within the treatment plant.
  • Operates chemical feed equipment, electric and hydraulic motors and any other equipment necessary for the treatment process.
  • Uses instrumentation and computer systems to collect and interpret water quality results.
  • Operates and maintains SCADA systems.
  • Performs minor maintenance to chemical analyzers and feed systems.
  • Operates low- and high-pressure pumps, well pumps, motor operated and manually operated valves and other water supply and pumping equipment.
  • Operates, monitors and controls engines and generators to provide emergency power during electrical power failures.
  • Performs routine maintenance on water treatment and pumping equipment and facilities.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests, performs moderately complex mathematical calculations, to determine rates of chemical addition and relate adjustments for process control, for treatment process. Examples of tests include chlorine residual, turbidity, particle size, Fluoride, conductivity, pH and temperature and coagulant doses.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, sanitary and professional appearance of the treatment and system supply facilities including buildings and grounds.
  • Receives, tests and unloads bulk chemical deliveries including stacking, mixing chemical solutions, adds chemicals to feed equipment and maintains proper chemical feed rates to ensure plant performance.
  • Inspects and regulates the flow of water through the treatment process and pumping facilities in accordance with changing rates of usage, changing quality of the water, and established policies and procedures.
  • Makes periodic rounds through and around the treatment and pumping facilities to inspect equipment and to check and record readings from various charts, meters, gauges and indicators.
  • Maintains logs and records of charts, meter and gauge readings, chemical feed settings, laboratory test results, plant operation, and other activities and data; prepares summary reports of operations.
  • Enters data into computerized spread sheets.
  • Answers incoming phone calls.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.

Work Environment:

  • Including but not limited to: fumes or air borne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, outdoor weather conditions, wet or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • A college education is desired and may be required for proper Operator Certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory according to implemented standard operating procedures. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and or ability required.
  • The Water Treatment Operator requires knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and safety requirements used in water treatment and pumping operations; knowledge and skill in the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment and instrumentation used in modern water treatment and pumping facilities; and knowledge of the functions and maintenance requirements of water filtration, treatment and pumping equipment.
  • The Water Treatment Operator requires the ability to take accurate readings to perform moderately complex laboratory tests, to make complex mathematical calculations, to keep accurate records, and to perform routine clerical duties. The Operator requires the ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
  • The Operator must have the ability to read, understand and execute written and oral instructions in the English language.
  • The Water Treatment Operator requires the ability to make independent, responsible decisions in response to changing operating conditions and emergencies.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Requires valid and current Water Treatment Plant Operator grade II certification as issued by the State of Rhode Island upon date of hire or a transferable license from another State that is acceptable to the RI certification board.
  • Valid and current Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade III preferred.
  • The Water Treatment Plant Operator requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
