Role Purpose: To assist in the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the ship’s engines, machinery, and engine room spaces.
Participate in engine room watches at sea (including Unmanned Machinery Space operations) and in port as instructed. Assist with daily operations, tasks, and maintenance of engine room equipment and ensure that machinery is adequately lubricated. Perform engine room housekeeping tasks to ensure a clean and safe working environment. Help maintain inventory of stores and other items as delegated by the 1st Assistant Engineer. Comply with safety, environmental, and security procedures and regulations.
Essential Knowledge: The Oiler must be familiar with company policies, SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag state regulations. Key knowledge areas include the Theory and Practice of Seamanship, maintenance of auxiliary machinery such as compressors, purifiers, pumps, and incinerators (basic practical knowledge), and the use of hand and power tools, as well as specialized workshop equipment. Knowledge of waste management, pollution control, and eco-friendly practices is also essential.
Essential Skills and Abilities: Effective communication and reporting skills are essential for the Oiler, along with the ability to maintain and assist in repairing engine equipment. Strong time management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and complete responsibilities on schedule are required. Proficiency in the use of hand tools, machine tools, and workshop equipment is crucial.
Experience: Demonstrates reliability and leadership behaviors in supporting engine room operations and watchkeeping. Effectively carries out engine room housekeeping and cosmetic maintenance. Provides reliable support in engine room machinery maintenance activities.
