Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about keeping workers safe and helping employers do the right thing? Join Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Contact Centre and play a vital role in protecting workers across the province.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Occupational Health and Safety Contact Centre, the Occupational Health and Safety (contact centre) Advisor serves as a primary point of contact for employers, workers, industry partners, and unions seeking clarity on the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulation, and Code. This role combines strong communication, analytical thinking, and legislative interpretation to provide timely, accurate information that supports compliance, reduces workplace incidents, and promotes safer worksites across Alberta.

Key responsibilities include:

• Provide authoritative interpretation and Information on the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Code to employers, workers, and stakeholders through phone, email, and written correspondence, including responses that may defend departmental policy positions.
• Receive, assess, and document serious incidents, ensuring accurate intake, proper logging, and timely escalation to enforcement and investigation teams.
• Conduct initial information related to incidents including directing reporting parties to secure worksites.
• Promote workplace safety through legislative requirements by providing and workers relevant departmental publications, informed by research and industry standards.
• Liaise with internal partners including OHS Officers, Legislation and Policy, Technical Services, Communications, and MLA constituency offices to support enforcement activities, media responses, and complex legislative inquiries.
• Maintain accurate records, referral pathways, and knowledge resources, including electronic logs, referral databases, and documentation used to support consistent information, training, and program delivery.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field (Occupational Health, Safety Management/Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Health Science, Public Health, Environmental Health/Sciences, HR, etc.) ; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

OHS Certificate or Diploma is strongly preferred. Contact Center experience will be preferred.

Assets:

• Strong OHS & Regulatory Expertise Extensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations, CSA/ANSI standards, and industry-recommended practices, with the ability to interpret and apply legislation in complex, real-world scenarios.
• Technical & Industry Knowledge: Solid understanding of industrial hygiene, safety management principles, construction and manufacturing processes, safety equipment, and related program areas (e.g., WCB, Safety Codes, Employment Standards, Environment, Apprenticeship & Industry Training).
• Research & Analytical Skills: Advanced research capability using legislation, databases, websites, and departmental systems (e.g., DASH, Service Now) to support evidence-based guidance beyond legislated requirements.
• Communication, Writing & Influence: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly explain decisions, defend departmental positions, resolve conflict, and provide diplomatic information to workers, employers, unions, industry groups, and stakeholders.
• High-Pressure Call & Case Management: Proven ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage sensitive, high-stress situations—including emergency calls, fatalities, concerns, and emotionally charged interactions—while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and resilience.
