Job Description

Wood is currently sourcing for a Crane Operator / Mechanic to join our Client team in Equatorial Guinea.

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of offshore pedestal cranes across the field, including remote platforms as required.

Crane operations include, but are not limited to, lifting and moving cargo for inboard lifts, loading and unloading of supply vessels and lifting of personnel during Billy Pugh transfers.

The Primary focus is to ensure safe and efficient lifting operations, with a focus on carrying out the basic daily and periodic inspections and maintenance of the cranes to maximize crane integrity and minimize crane down time in accordance with regulations and company performance standards.

Additional duties include but are not limited to assisting in the control of portable rigging and lifting equipment in field & planning and development of lifting & rigging operations and plans during crane operation and maintenance down time.

Location: offshore Equatorial Guinea, West Africa

Rotation Work Pattern: 4 weeks on 4 weeks off, 7-day week 12-hour day

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Operate cranes within cranes design for inboard cargo lifts around installations, vessel lifts for loading and backloading of equipment & lifting of personnel during Billy Pugh transfers for crew changes and day trip personnel.
  • Ensuring all lifting operations are carried out in accordance with Approved lifting plans and risk assessments and with consideration to changing sea state and weather conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with deck crew, banksmen and vessel captains using agreed methods.
  • Carry out crane daily check inspection sheets and maintain crane daily logbooks for condition of cranes / crane activities / crane availability & operational readiness.
  • Carry out general routine maintenance and housekeeping of cranes such as checking oil and water level, wire rope visual inspections, greasing of ropes & bushings and reporting any operational or physical defects or abnormalities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of cranes, hoisting systems, winches, hydraulics, gearboxes, wire ropes, and control systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electromechanical faults.
  • Raise and create work notifications in SAP following identification of faults. (SAP Training can be provided)
  • Assist with the control of offshore rigging lofts.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
  • Adhere to offshore safety management systems, PTW & LOTO procedures.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, drills, and audits as required.
  • Stop operations if unsafe conditions are identified and report near misses or incidents using company safety observation system.
  • Ensure all lifting gear is certified, pre-use / post-use inspected, and fit for purpose.
  • Assist with daily manifests for lifting activities. (Deck lift plans)
  • Maintain and organize the rigging loft, ensuring compliance with standards.

Essential requirements for this role:

Education & Experience:

  • Completed a recognized mechanical apprenticeship
  • Hold a recognized mechanical qualification, Degree, NVQ, City & Guilds or equivalent
  • Stage 3 Offshore Crane Operator certificate and in date assessment
  • Several years previous experience working in a similar role offshore

Job Specific Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to perform mechanical troubleshooting and repairs.
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of lift plans, load charts and industry best practices and standards for rigging and lifting and crane operations.
  • Able to develop and interpret lifting plans
  • API RP 2D inspector certification – Preferred
  • Banksman / Slinger Certification (OPITO / NSL / NVQ)
  • Rigging & Lifting trained (OPITO / NSL / NVQ ).
  • Rigging Loft Management and Inspection Training
  • LOLER Appointed Person or Deck Foreman Training (OPITO / NSL / ECITB / CPCS)

PC Application Skills:

  • Familiar with SAP for maintenance notifications and work order management.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft / Word / Excel

  • Able to work autonomously as required.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a safety‑critical environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Reporting:

  • Maintenance Supervisor:
    • Provides allocation of Day-to-day lifting operation tasks
    • Provided allocation of planned maintenance.
    • Crane operators must report crane defects, issues, and concerns to Maintenance Supervisor in a timely manner. (Joint reporting)
    • Crane operator provides daily updates on maintenance activities and progress. (Joint reporting)
    • Implement time management strategies for team operations.
    • Approval of all travel arrangements relating to rotational requirements.

    • Provides Technical support and guidance on queries relating to rigging & lifting operational safety, improvements, efficiencies or concerns.
    • Reports to R&L Supervisor for guidance on planning of lifting operations and, Review and approval of lifting plans.
    • Crane operator provides daily updates on maintenance activities and progress. (Joint reporting)
    • Crane operators must report crane defects, issues, and concerns to Rigging & Lifting Supervisor in a timely manner (Joint reporting)
