Job Description

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer with 4-5 years of hands-on experience in project execution, preferably from paint, chemical, resin, solvent-based, specialty chemical, or process manufacturing industries. The role involves planning, coordinating, supervising, and safely executing engineering projects related to plant equipment, process utilities, piping, structural fabrication, installation, commissioning, and maintenance support.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution

  • Execute mechanical engineering projects related to plant expansion, modification, equipment installation, piping, structural fabrication, utility systems, and process support systems.

  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, EHS, quality, procurement, stores, contractors, vendors, consultants, and internal stakeholders for timely completion of assigned projects.

  • Supervise site activities including fabrication, erection, installation, alignment, testing, commissioning, trial runs, and handover.

  • Ensure completion of projects as per approved drawings, technical specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, statutory guidelines, and timelines.

  • Prepare project schedules, monitor daily progress, identify delays or bottlenecks, and support corrective actions.

Mechanical, Structural & Utility Works

  • Handle mechanical installation and maintenance support for process equipment, tanks, pumps, pipelines, agitators, vessels, valves, platforms, and utility equipment.

  • Supervise structural fabrication, pipe racks, equipment supports, access platforms, ladders, walkways, handrails, and plant modification works.

  • Review and interpret GA drawings, layouts, P&IDs, structural drawings, fabrication drawings, and utility schematics.

  • Ensure proper material selection, measurement, welding quality, fit-up, alignment, hydro / pneumatic testing support, and site inspection.

  • Support operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of process utilities such as compressed air, chilled water, cooling water, HVAC, pumps, piping systems, and related utility networks.

AutoCAD & Engineering Documentation

  • Prepare, review, and modify basic AutoCAD drawings for equipment layouts, piping routes, support structures, utility systems, and civil / mechanical interface requirements.

  • Maintain project documentation including drawings, BOQs, measurement sheets, inspection reports, safety permits, commissioning reports, and handover documents.

  • Support preparation of scope of work, technical specifications, material requisitions, contractor work orders, technical comparisons, and as-built documentation.

Contractor & Vendor Management

  • Coordinate with contractors for manpower planning, tools, tackles, machinery, materials, and daily job execution.

  • Ensure contractor compliance with safety, quality, schedule, housekeeping, and 5S expectations.

  • Verify contractor work quality, measurements, material reconciliation, bill certification, and scope completion.

  • Follow up with vendors for technical clarifications, delivery timelines, installation support, and commissioning assistance.

Safety Compliance / EHS Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all project execution, fabrication, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and utility-related activities are carried out in full compliance with plant safety standards, statutory requirements, and company EHS procedures.

  • Ensure strict compliance with EHS guidelines, plant safety rules, PPE requirements, and statutory safety regulations during project and maintenance activities.

  • Implement, monitor, and close the work permit system for hot work, height work, confined space entry, electrical isolation, excavation, lifting activities, line breaking, and general maintenance work.

  • Carry out job safety checks, hazard identification, risk assessment, and Job Safety Analysis before starting critical activities.

  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and ensure contractors understand job hazards, control measures, emergency procedures, and permit conditions.

  • Verify availability and proper use of PPE, barricades, warning signage, fire extinguishers, fall protection systems, gas testing requirements, and certified lifting tools / tackles.

  • Ensure implementation of LOTO procedures during equipment isolation, maintenance, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.

  • Monitor safe practices during welding, gas cutting, grinding, scaffolding, lifting, structural erection, line opening, and equipment installation.

  • Coordinate with EHS, production, maintenance, electrical, and utility teams for safety clearance and job execution approvals.

  • Stop work immediately in case of unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, or deviation from approved permit conditions.

  • Support near-miss reporting, incident investigation, safety audits, and timely closure of corrective and preventive actions.

  • Maintain safety documentation including work permits, toolbox talk records, inspection checklists, contractor safety records, and audit compliance reports.

  • Promote a zero-accident culture through proactive safety monitoring, contractor engagement, and continuous improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Mechanical project execution experience in manufacturing / process industries.

  • Knowledge of piping, pumps, tanks, fabrication, structural works, equipment erection, and commissioning.

  • Ability to read and understand AutoCAD drawings, P&IDs, layouts, engineering documents, and as-built drawings.

  • Knowledge of measurement, estimation, BOQ preparation, material planning, contractor billing, and project documentation.

Safety & Workplace Management Skills

  • Strong understanding of industrial safety practices in paint, chemical, or process manufacturing plants.

  • Hands-on knowledge of work permit systems, LOTO, contractor safety management, confined space safety, hot work safety, height work safety, lifting safety, and fire prevention.

  • Ability to identify hazards, implement practical control measures, conduct toolbox talks, and ensure site safety compliance.

  • Knowledge of 5S, housekeeping standards, visual management, workplace organization, and audit closure processes.

Software Skills

  • AutoCAD - basic to intermediate level.

  • MS Office - Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

  • CMMS / ERP knowledge will be an added advantage.

Behavioral Skills

  • Strong site coordination, follow-up, ownership, and execution discipline.

  • Good communication skills with the ability to work with cross-functional teams, contractors, and vendors.

  • Problem-solving mindset, safety-first approach, and ability to work during shutdowns and project timelines.

Added Advantage

  • Exposure to CMMS for maintenance planning, work orders, preventive maintenance, breakdown records, spare tracking, and equipment history.

  • Basic knowledge of civil works such as equipment foundations, pedestals, drains, trenches, flooring, grouting, building modifications, and civil / mechanical coordination.

  • Experience in engineering store inventory management, critical spares, consumables, tools, material codification, min-max levels, and spare part reconciliation.

  • Knowledge of process utility handling in paint, resin, chemical, solvent, or process manufacturing plants.

  • Familiarity with ISO systems, TPM, Kaizen, EHS audits, 5S audits, and plant compliance documentation.

Key Deliverables

  • Timely completion of assigned engineering projects with adherence to scope, quality, cost, and schedule.

  • Safe execution of all project and maintenance activities with zero major safety violations.

  • 100% compliance with work permit, LOTO, PPE, and contractor safety requirements.

  • Timely closure of safety observations, near-miss CAPA, 5S audit points, and EHS audit actions.

  • Proper maintenance of project drawings, BOQs, measurement sheets, inspection records, commissioning reports, and handover documents.

  • Effective contractor coordination, quality control, measurement verification, billing support, and material reconciliation.

  • Clean, organized, safe, and 5S-compliant engineering work areas, workshops, utility areas, and stores.

  • Support for plant utilities, modifications, shutdown jobs, reliability improvements, and maintenance enhancement activities.
