Job Description

The Public Advocate, an independently elected public official, serves as a direct link between city government and residents, acting as a “watchdog” for New Yorkers. The Public Advocate is a non-voting member of the New York City Council, an ex officio member of all Council committees and introduces and co-sponsors legislation. The Public Advocate serves on various City committees and appoints members to several boards and commissions.

The Office of the New York City Public Advocate reviews and investigates residents’ complaints about City services and administrative actions, assists people having difficulty receiving City services, assesses whether City agencies are responsive to the public, and recommends legislative or policy proposals to address identified service deficiencies.

The New York City Public Advocate’s Office is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented part-time Office Assistant to join our Administration team. Under the supervision of the Office Manager, the Office Assistant will provide critical support to our office staff, ensuring the smooth operation of our front office and facilities management, and serve as the receiving clerk.

Key Responsibilities

-Provide reception desk coverage with a punctual arrival. Permanent work schedule is (8:30 AM - 4:30 PM), three days per week.
-Serve as receiving clerk to process all delivery packing slips and provide them to the office staff for processing.
-Complete office supply requests and work with the facilities associate to complete the annual inventory report.
-Assist with general office common space upkeep.
-Prepare, schedule, and track office communications.
-Provide general administrative support to the Administration Department.
-Support onsite office-sponsored special events as assigned.

Qualifications

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in customer service or administrative responsibilities in an area related to duties described above.
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
