Hours and days vary based on course offerings and enrollment. A majority of the OTA courses are scheduled as day classes, so faculty must have availability during typical business hours.

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board. Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for Adjunct Faculty for our Occupational Therapy Assistant ( OTA) Program in the School of Health Professions. The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Virginia Western Community College, currently in the candidacy stage of accreditation and is seeking adjunct faculty to assist with delivering face-to-face curricular content to OTA studentsThe program admitted its first class in Fall 2025 with adjunct positions starting in the Summer semester of 2026.

Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on a course-by-course, semester basis as needed. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching discipline and in trends in community college education. Applications will be received and considered on a continuous basis. Review of applications will begin when a need arises and will continue until needed positions are filled.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications

Candidates must be a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) or Occupational Therapy Assistant ( OTA) with current Virginia OT or OTA license or eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia. License needs to be active, unrestricted, and the applicant should be in good standing with the Virginia Board of Medicine. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate contemporary expertise in their assigned subject areas and student advisement, including knowledge of resources for student well-being, as demonstrated by their curriculum vitae (CV).

Candidates with all clinical backgrounds and area of expertise are encouraged to submit an application as adjunct needs will likely change each semester. Areas of clinical expertise may include:

  • Experience working with clients with physical disabilities (including pediatric, youth, and adult populations)
  • Experience working in pediatric clinical settings
  • Experience treating patients with developmental disabilities
  • Experience with assistive technologies and devices
  • Experience working with clients with mental and behavioral health needs
  • Experience working with the older adult population
  • Rehabilitation management experience.
  • Knowledge of foundational concepts in occupational therapy

At this time, assigned adjunct teaching will likely occur during daytime hours, so candidates must have availability to teach during typical business hours. All adjunct faculty positions require excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.

Upon hire, faculty will be required to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching and student evaluation and should expect annual evaluation of these skills. As previously noted, all adjunct positions are assigned on a semester basis and are not necessarily guaranteed for the next academic semester or year.

Additional Considerations
Prior teaching experience in an occupational therapy assistant/occupational therapy academic program. Knowledge of curriculum design, application of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice concepts and in-person content delivery. Experience using technology in the classroom. Experience teaching in a college setting. Three years post-licensure clinical experience.
