Full-Time Occupational Therapist – Group Facilitator - Inpatient Psych unit Samaritan Hospital

Occupational therapy is widely known for helping individuals regain physical function and independence, but its role in mental health care is equally impactful. Mental health occupational therapy involves using therapeutic activities to support patients who experience mental health challenges, as well as improving the mental well-being of those coping with physical ailments.
Occupational therapists work alongside patients to develop skills, adapt environments, and create routines that foster emotional stability and improve quality of life. Occupational therapists play a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals to achieve mental wellness.

What you will do:

Occupational therapists are skilled at assessing a person’s physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities to identify areas where mental health support may be needed. They create individualized treatment plans to help patients develop coping strategies, build social skills, and improve daily functioning, all of which contribute to mental health stabilization and growth.​

Responsibilities:

  • Work with patients to build meaningful manageable routines to ensure a solid sense of control and purpose for our patients.

  • Work with patients on developing coping strategies such as mindfulness, relaxation and problem-solving skills

  • Enhance social skills of patients as well as interpersonal relationships. This includes communication, listening and emotional regulation to improve quality of life

  • Promote engagement and meaningful activities during hospitalization. Ensure patients engage in activities that promote joy and accomplishment when able

  • Facilitate Group therapy

  • Individualized treatment planning

  • Life skills development where patients work on life skills such as money management, personal hygiene and meal preparation to help them live independently.

  • Assist with Community reintegration

  • Provide Health and wellness programs that emphasize nutrition, stress management and physical health to support overall quality of life

  • Sensory integration for strategies to regulate patients’ sensory needs

  • Provide Social skills training for those in need

  • Provide Pain Management techniques for those patients who would benefit

  • Assist patients with Goal setting

  • Assist with Social and family support for patients with challenging support networks

  • Other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate of an approved Occupational Therapy program with a Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree

  • Current NYS OT license and registration

  • 4 years’ experience in a healthcare setting

  • BLSCPR certification

Pay Range : $35.85 - $45.96 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
