Job Description

Within the context of a patient/client and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision, values and policies of the organization, provides occupational therapy services to a specific group of children (0-6 years) with physical, neurological and/or developmental challenges and other complex developmental diagnoses who experience challenges in the area of feeding and swallowing and require support to meet their nutritional needs. Coordinates the care for children with complex feeding needs in partnership with families and caregivers. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, and other health care professionals/providers/community agencies to achieve excellence in health services and education within the community and home settings. QUALIFICATIONS:Education & Experience Current full registration as an Occupational Therapist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC). Two (2) years recent & related pediatric experience in a community setting including care management, clinical assessment of children with physical/neurological problems (particularly feeding issues), fine motor and sensory difficulties or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid B.C. Driver’s license. Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle for which mileage reimbursement is paid.Knowledge & AbilitiesDemonstrated knowledge of Occupational Therapy theory and practice within a client and family centred model of care.Demonstrated knowledge of the CHCPBC standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners.Demonstrated knowledge of feeding issues with children with neurological impairments.Demonstrated knowledge in the assessment of developmental, sensory and/or motor problems.Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric evidenced based treatment programs (Sequential-Oral-Sensory Approach) for children with feeding difficulties, including children struggling with food preference or problem feeding contributing to limited diets. Demonstrated ability to assess and provide interventions for children living with complex heath issues.Demonstrated knowledge of complex family structures and issues associated with chronic health conditions. Demonstrated ability to administer/interpret standardized tests and develop functional recommendations for children with sensory motor difficulties.Demonstrated commitment to working within a family directed service philosophy. Demonstrated ability to apply a risk management approach and ethical decision- making principles to complex family and complex health situations.Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with care management theory, diversity and multicultural health care practice in working with children, families, care providers, professionals, special interest groups and the general public.Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of adult learning and group dynamics. Demonstrated knowledge of facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution techniques and demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.Demonstrated knowledge of standardized pediatric assessments. Demonstrated teaching/training skills. Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver in-service education sessions to lay and professional groups.Demonstrated ability to prescribe and/or recommend a variety of self-help aids and rehabilitation equipment.Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to work and to perform all duties with minimal supervision.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize and prioritize workload. Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques. Ability to work independently and to use a cooperative approach to program delivery.Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team environment. Ability to deal with others tactfully, effectively, and respectfully Basic computer literacy. Ability to carry out the physical demands of the job.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
