What You Will Do

As the Obstetric and Bleeding Disorder Surgery Coordinator, you will be responsible for coordinating surgical procedures for adult and pediatric bleeding disorders patients, manage tracking and documentation of surgical outcomes, facilitate delivery planning and cord blood care recommendations for pregnant patients, and the overall triaging and care coordination for bleeding disorder OB and surgical patients.

The Opportunity

  • In coordination with a physician, prepares surgery and delivery letters of care and distributes letters to appropriate personnel and facilities.
  • Document operative and postoperative surgical outcomes within the appropriate record systems, used for data collection and reporting.
  • Participate in weekly multidisciplinary surgery team meetings.
  • Facilitate the preparation, distribution, and shipment of cord blood kits, and follow up on post-delivery cord blood specimen results.
  • Manage prescription refill requests under physician direction.
  • Document all patient encounters accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Provide patient education to support understanding of care plans, procedures, and treatment expectations.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge:

  • Care coordination protocols within a medical practice, including familiarity with nursing assessment, diagnosis, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Health care systems, structure, and functions; community resources; state nursing laws; nurse practice guidelines; and policies and procedures.
  • Basic laboratory procedures and use of health care technology, equipment, and supplies.
  • Medical record documentation standards and federal/state regulations governing the release of health information.

Skills

  • Strong judgment, critical thinking, and prioritization.
  • Effective time management, problem solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records to review patient history and support clinical decision-making.
  • Ability to navigate highly sensitive interpersonal situations with professionalism.
  • Competence in triage decision-making and remaining calm and responsive in emergency situations.

Abilities

  • Engage patients and families in developing and implementing individualized care plans.
  • Communicate clearly, calmly, and compassionately with patients.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Document accurately in the medical record, using correct spelling, punctuation, and with clear presentation of clinical information and care plans.
  • Calculate and clearly communicate medication dosages and administration intervals.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing collaborative care for patients with chronic diseases; hematology experience preferred.

This position is open to residents of the State of Indiana, and requires routine presence at our Center in Indianapolis, IN. Frequency of on-site presence is dependent upon role and department needs.
