GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Maintenance Specialist position involves advanced (senior-level) carpentry and general maintenance work for the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Facilities and Asset Management (FAM) Division. Work involves building maintenance, repair, and alteration to different mediums. May provide guidance and training to others on construction, maintenance, or repair and alteration projects. This position is instrumental in supporting the OAG’s infrastructure, ensuring safe and well-maintained facilities that support the needs of the agency and its employees. Additionally, this position conducts motor vehicle operations work involving transporting, loading, and unloading cargo.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Acts as the primary handyman for OAG and the State Office of Risk Management (SORM) occupied facilities in the Capitol Complex. Regularly performs and coordinates a variety of building upkeep, repairs, alterations, and structural modifications
  • Performs and finalizes work orders to ensure assignments are completed on schedule, prioritizing maintenance tasks and repairs to meet customer needs, improve safety, and minimize disruptions
  • Assesses repair and design project requests to evaluate their feasibility, material requirements, costs, and estimated turnaround times
  • Performs carpentry work such as the installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, doors, windows, wood fixtures, and furniture
  • Acquires the necessary materials and supplies for repairs, performing tasks to meet high-quality standards and ensuring all work adheres to safety, operational, and procurement guidelines
  • Develops designs for requested customized furniture items and submits proposals to the supervisor and client for feedback and approval
  • Repairs and maintains furniture and equipment, conducting thorough inspections to ensure proper functionality and safety and to prevent future issues
  • Adheres to strict safety standards by using appropriate safety precautions, wearing protective gear, and inspecting tools. Regularly performs maintenance on power tools to ensure safety and reliability
  • Assembles, installs, reconfigures, repairs, and maintains modular furniture systems in accordance with OAG requirements
  • Operates agency-owned vehicles with careful attention to their use and maintenance. Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles and equipment as required, ensuring they are kept in good working condition. Tracks and reports vehicle mileage and provides detailed service and maintenance records for agency vehicles
  • Provides handyman services as needed to OAG-leased spaces within the Austin area
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and well-stocked workshop, ensuring all tools and equipment are in proper working condition and readily accessible
  • Regularly inspects and services all equipment and tools used in maintenance work, ensuring functionality and preventing breakdowns
  • Keeps an accurate inventory of all handyman tools and supplies, monitoring stock levels and ordering replacements or new items as needed to maintain an efficient workflow
  • May provide assistance with office moves, processing and delivery of supply orders, assisting in the receiving process, entering and reviewing assets, and assisting with logistical operations projects, processing, maintenance, and completing service work orders
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Experience: Three years of full-time experience working in the following (or closely related) fields: handyman services, building maintenance and repair, furniture repair, fabrication of modular furniture, and the mounting of pictures, white boards, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Knowledge of furniture design, hand and power tools, and modular furniture construction.
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and operation of buildings, equipment, and utility systems.
  • Knowledge of building materials.
  • Knowledge of fire and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance, electronics, carpentry, painting, building materials, plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Skill in selecting appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Skill in troubleshooting situations to determine appropriate actions to resolve problems.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
  • Skill with Microsoft Office, with an emphasis in Excel
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to pass and remain in good standing with the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Background clearances.
  • Ability to work from drawings, diagrams, floor plans, blueprints, sketches, and computerized work orders.
  • Ability to apply proper methods, techniques, and procedures in the maintenance and repair of buildings and related equipment.
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
  • Ability to work safely in a warehouse environment and perform warehouse-related duties

  • Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds daily
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Ability to use personal vehicle for business-related travel
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Formal training in building construction, maintenance or repair, furniture repair, fabrication of modular furniture, or similar.
  • Experience: Work experience in building construction, maintenance or repair, furniture repair, fabrication of modular furniture, or similar.
  • Experience: Journeyman-level in building trade experience (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or similar) with proven proficiency in multi-trade maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with a variety of different furniture and modular products from different vendors.
  • Skills: Demonstrates skill in delivering office repair or remodeling services in a timely manner, with as little disruption of the customer’s work as possible.
  • Abilities: Demonstrates ability to identify and implement creative solutions to problems with office furniture and decorations.
  • Other Language: Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak Spanish
