The role

As the NZECP‑34 Proximity Engineer, you’ll play a key role in protecting public safety and maintaining the integrity of Vector’s electricity network. Sitting within Field Services, this specialist role is responsible for assessing proximity risks around overhead lines, reviewing third‑party engineering submissions, and making technical compliance decisions under NZECP‑34, including whether Close Approach Consents should be approved or declined.

You’ll manage a dedicated NZECP‑34 enquiries inbox, validate engineering calculations, and communicate clear, well‑reasoned decisions to customers, builders, scaffolders, engineers and council stakeholders. The role balances detailed engineering judgement with structured, process‑driven work and regular stakeholder engagement within statutory timeframes.

What makes this role unique is its position at the intersection of engineering, regulation and public safety. You’ll be working at the forefront of how NZECP‑34 is applied across New Zealand as it becomes increasingly embedded in building consent and regulatory processes, while developing a highly specialised and in‑demand skill set with future growth potential.

Who are we looking for?

  • Strong engineering capability, with the ability to interpret, assess and challenge engineering reports and calculations relating to NZECP‑34
  • A sound understanding of the electricity distribution industry, ideally gained within an EDB or an engineering consultancy working closely with EDBs
  • In‑depth practical knowledge of NZECP‑34, including making compliance decisions and assessing Close Approach Consents
  • Ability to manage detailed, process‑driven work while communicating technical decisions clearly to a wide range of stakeholders
  • An engineering qualification or relevant electrical background, with openness to building deeper technical expertise in this specialist area.
