Nursing Supervisor - RN- Evenings | St. Joseph Institute for Addiction | Port Matilda, Pennsylvania
About the Job:
PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for ensuring coordinated delivery of client care in accordance with the established standards of care, mental health practice, facility policy, goals and objectives to ensure safe, efficient, and therapeutic client care. This position provides support to the nursing staff on all units, supervises and directs all aspects of client care, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility during times administrative staff are not present or available. Relates effectively with other shifts for continuity of care and ensures staffing is adequate to provide care.
Roles and Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides, delegates, coordinates and evaluates care of client through the collaborative efforts of team members and in accordance with the nursing process and standards of care and practice. Provide general nursing care in a facility.
- Ensures all clients receive a comprehensive nursing assessment, admitting provider orders completed and care plan initiated.
- Coordinates nursing, medical and/or behavioral health care activities with all staff to ensure smooth and complete coordination of efforts during shared shift.
- Identifies and prioritizes issues of importance, including those priority issues as set by leadership. Collaborates with department leaders and corporate leaders, as needed.
- Communicates instructions, expectations and timelines clearly and concisely.
- Performs storage, accounting for and administration of medications / medical equipment. Removes from service nonfunctioning equipment and initiates needed replacements. Consults with medical staff or pharmacist when a side-effect or error is suspected or detected.
- Provides professional and administrative leadership to staff.
- Performs rounds to all units to provide monitoring, supervision, direction, and assistance as needed.
- Schedules staff to ensure full coverage at all times and to ensure staffing is accurate according to established guidelines and unit needs.
- Assures admission intake assessments are completed accurately and followed up per Facility policy, provides referrals as needed or assists with admissions.
- Participates in interviewing, orienting, mentoring, retaining, and training of staff as needed.
- Maintains productivity levels that are aligned with client census, curtailing unnecessary overtime and/or excessive staff work hours.
- Manages staff scheduling and maintains an updated plan for contingency staffing.
- Maintains accountability expectations for self and staff in all areas of job performance.
- Engages staff in quality and safety basics to ensure sustained, measurable compliance.
- Identifies staff educational needs and ensures they are addressed with education programs that are attended by staff.
- Holds staff accountable for non-compliance and client safety concerns, as well as attendance, following policies, behavior, and adherence to code of conduct.
- Documents medical, behavioral health information and nursing care.
- Administers medications and maintains records in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Provides structure and maintains a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the clients and other care providers.
- Coordinates with Human Resources in reviewing staff timecards for payroll pre-process to ensure accurate employee worked hours.
- Ensures adequate inventory of supplies is maintained for the units and completes purchase order requests as needed.
- Collects and organizes the Medication Administration Record (MAR) and the Destruction of Medication Log upon client discharge as submitted by Nurses.
- Functions as the lead nurse on assigned shift.
- Provides oversight of staff assignments and/or direction of duties, tasks or projects and staffing performance.
- Assist in developing a plan of care with specific and measurable goals, objectives and interventions defining actions unique to each client's needs. Assist in updating and revising the plan of care as goals/objectives are met or when the client's condition changes.
- Addresses employee performance issues at the time noticed and assists with any follow-up as necessary.
- Assists in collection of data to develop QI reports and graphs.
- May work a shift on a specific unit when all other efforts in filling the shift has been exhausted.
- Assumes client care assignment in emergency situations as needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an approved/accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
- Two or more years’ experience as an RN required.
- One or more years’ experience in behavioral health required.
WORK LOCATION:
This position is onsite at the facility and is not a remote position.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid current RN license from the state or from a compact state, where applicable.
- Certified in Psychiatric Nursing preferred.
- CPR certification and de-escalation training required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
- First aid may be required based on state or facility.
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:
One or more years’ supervisory or charge nurse experience preferred.
