The RN Supervisor seeks to ensure the delivery and documentation of optimum health care services to all persons living in the residential settings as well as the daily preservation of each person’s need for, and right to knowledgeable, compassionate care, marked by dignity and respect for the uniqueness of each person’s life.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Use discretion and independent judgment involving the comparison and evaluation of possible courses of conduct. These judgments may affect business operations or have a significant financial impact.
  • Has the authority to waive or deviate from established rules or policies, but will always keep open the lines of communication of such issues with their direct supervisor and/or upper administration, as this makes for best business practices.
  • Has significant influence on hiring, transferring, suspending, laying-off, recalling, promoting, discharging, rewarding, or disciplining nurses under her direct supervision.
  • Assume responsibility for monitoring the assessment and delivery of all nursing and health-related services in the residential program.
  • Follow OPWDD regulations and standards regarding the implementation of all nursing/ health-related procedures, protocols, and services.
  • Ensure availability for 24/7 on-call telephone accessibility.
  • Ensures nursing oversight is provided at a residence in the absence of the assigned nurse.
  • Conduct monthly, or more frequently if necessary, Nursing Update Reviews at all sites and maintains documentation of these meetings.
  • Participate in case conferences, annual reviews, and team meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure consistent communication with Residential Administrative Team members and participates in Administrative Team Meetings, as well as informing the Director of Quality Assurance of any clinical issues or concerns.
  • Assist Residential Director in hiring Residential Nurses as needed.
  • Provide nursing orientation and mentorship to any newly hired Residential Nurses.
  • Serve as a member of the Incident Review, Human Rights, Psychotropic, Medical/Infection Control Committees.
  • Conduct formal in-service trainings when indicated or necessary.
  • Function as an additional clinical resource for the residential program.
  • Attend continuing education seminars as able or available.
  • Review referral packets for potential candidates for admission to a residence and participate in the admission process.
  • Schedule and conduct annual internal audits of medical records and systems at each residence.
  • Work with the Residential Nurses in establishing and maintaining relationships with health care providers utilized by the residential program.
  • Mandatory attendance at required in-service training, along with ability to absorb and demonstrate compliance with all regulations and Block Institute policy and procedure requirements is required for this position.
  • Attendance/Punctuality is consistently at work and on time. Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent. Arrive at meetings and appointments on time.

Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises all residential nursing staff in carrying out their duties as per OPWDD, Block Institute, and generally acceptable nursing procedures.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Current RN Licensure NYS B.S. in Nursing or a related specialty
  • 6 years Clinical Experience, of which two (2) were in a supervisory position – hospital/clinic setting preferred
  • Experience with developmentally disabled adults preferred
  • Must travel between sites regularly

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, push, pull, lift and/or transfer individuals, use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. They must be able to hear, speak, and see in order to perform nursing functions, and to observe and evaluate others who are performing such tasks.

Work Environment:

Generally, there are no specific work environment issues to deal with, although some residences may have stairs that must be navigated. Travel between residences regularly via public or private transportation, in all kinds of weather.
