The Nursing Manager is responsible for providing operational and clinical leadership for all nursing and patient care services within the hospital. The role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in line with clinical governance standards, regulatory requirements, and the hospital's strategic objectives.
Working closely with the Medical Director and senior management, the Nursing Manager oversees nursing workforce planning, policy development, quality improvement initiatives, and professional development, while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement across the Nursing Department.
Coordinate patient care delivery with medical staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic, high-quality outcomes.
Ensure consistent delivery of quality nursing services across all units daily.
Promote optimum patient, visitor, and staff relations to ensure a positive care environment.
Liaise with multidisciplinary teams to support integrated, patient-centered care.
Develop, implement, and monitor nurse duty rosters, adjusting schedules to address absenteeism, emergencies, and workload demands.
Plan and optimize nursing staffing resources for productivity, coverage, and service efficiency.
Supervise Nurses, Patient Care Assistants, Unit Heads, Nurse Interns, and Student Nurses.
Oversee clinical training, mentorship, and practical placements for nurse interns and student nurses.
Develop, review, and implement nursing care policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
Enforce health, safety, infection control, and occupational safety regulations.
Assess daily nursing activities to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, clinical quality, and operational efficiency.
Plan and deliver regular training, continuing education, and capacity-building programs for nursing staff.
Mentor and coach nursing leaders and frontline staff to enhance clinical competence and leadership capability.
Promote evidence-based nursing practice and professional excellence.
Participate in management and budget planning discussions as they relate to nursing operations.
Support cost-effective resource utilization while maintaining high standards of patient care.
Monitor nursing performance metrics and contribute to hospital-wide quality and performance reporting.
Serve as the primary liaison between the Nursing Department and Hospital Management.
Foster effective communication and collaboration across clinical and administrative teams.
Perform any other duties assigned by Management or the Medical Director.
Bachelor's degree in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing).
Valid Registered Nurse/Midwife (RN/RM) certification and current practicing licence.
Master's degree in Nursing, Health Administration, or related field is an advantage.
Certification in healthcare leadership, management, or patient safety is desirable.
Minimum of 10 years of professional nursing experience, with at least 5 years in a senior nursing management or leadership role, preferably in a tertiary healthcare setting.
Proven track record in leading nursing teams, managing operations, and implementing clinical and operational standards.
Experience in facilities pursuing or maintaining international healthcare accreditation (e.g., JCI) is an added advantage.
Strong understanding of clinical governance, nursing standards, and patient-centered care models.
Sound knowledge of Nigerian healthcare regulations, NHIS operations, and hospital compliance requirements.
Proficiency in hospital management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Exceptional leadership, organizational, and team-building skills.
Demonstrated ability to develop policies, manage budgets, and monitor performance metrics.
Strong capability to motivate, mentor, and develop nursing staff, including interns and students.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
