Job Description

Nemours is seeking a Nursing Assistant for our 3 West floor! Position is casual, 12 hour rotating shifts - 48 hours in 6 weeks. One winter and one summer holiday. One weekend shift out of six. This position is responsible for: Assisting with general activities of the patient care unit and assist the health care team with performance of patient care activities, under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse.

3 West is a 24-bed medical surgical unit for patients 0-21 years of age. This unit is designated for orthopedic patients, patients in need of comprehensive rehabilitation and acute rehabilitation of both traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, ventilator-dependent patients, and patients with tracheotomies. Additional patient populations include neurosurgical and nonsurgical neurology, and infants transitioning from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Neurology and neurosurgical patients are also cared for on 3 West. This unit was designed to provide single patient care rooms to allow for privacy and family presence during the hospital stay.

Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures an adequate stock of all necessary equipment and supplies in designated areas at established par levels.
  2. Ensures a clean and safe patient care unit.
  3. Assists patients with activities of daily life (bath, feed, play, etc.) and provides other patient care as directed.
  4. Assists other staff in examination or treatment procedures including positioning, holding and comforting patients.
  5. Assures all supplies are accurately charged.
  6. Contacts pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as designated by the Registered Nurse.
  7. Collects patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, other per policy), paying close attention to patient safety, comfort and accuracy of information.
  8. Uses Hospital Information Systems as required for patient care, (e.g. documenting vital signs and patient care activities.)
  9. Accurately relays information from physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and others.
  10. Transports patients and delivers reports, supplies, etc., to other patient units or Nemours/AIDHC locations as needed.
  11. Transports medications from Pharmacy or pneumatic tube system to an appropriate licensed personnel in the patient care area for immediate patient use or storage in the Medication Room on the patient care area.
  12. Promotes patient safety and participates in activities that adhere to patient safety standards and procedures. Protects patient privacy and maintains confidentiality.
  13. Courteously and professionally covers patient care unit front desk as needed. This includes promptly answering telephones, greeting patients, sending reports, distributing, sorting, or processing mail, entering orders, managing medical record, etc.
  14. Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
  15. Participates in unit, departmental and hospital education programs.
  16. Attends unit/departmental meetings regularly.
  17. Demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients of all ages; neonates, infants, toddlers, school aged, adolescents and adults.

Qualifications:

  • American Heart Association BLS required
  • High School Diploma required
  • Minimum 1 year patient care experience preferred.
  • Able to understand laboratory orders, computer information, and some medical terminology.
  • Able to obtain specimens, including blood specimens, from a patient population that is primarily pediatric and often ill, handicapped, or restricted in some way.
