Akron General’s 5400 Oncology Unit is a 27-bed acute care medical hematology and oncology unit specializing in the care of cancer patients, as well as hospice and palliative care. Caregivers receive specialized training in chemotherapy precautions and end-of-life care, with hands-on learning opportunities to develop chemotherapy competency while providing compassionate care to patients and families. As a Nurse Technician, you will assist with direct patient care activities under the supervision of an RN. Come join a strong, compassionate team full of endless growth. This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working days/evenings/nights/weekends between 12:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m., with a minimum of 64 hours required during the summer months.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheters.

  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to RN.

  • Assist with keeping patients' rooms clean and orderly.

  • Complete mandatory education and training to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Nursing student in good standing in an accredited nursing school program

  • OR unlicensed graduate of an accredited nursing school program

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

  • Maintain competencies specific to patient population served

  • Satisfactorily complete hospital orientation

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force rarely, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
