The Nurse Specialist – Ambulatory Nursing provides expert educational, clinical, and programmatic support to ambulatory nursing practice across BIDMC. This role focuses on professional development, competency management, quality outcomes, and the integration of evidence-based practice to promote high-quality, patient-centered care. The Nurse Specialist serves as a key resource for ambulatory nursing leadership, councils, and interdisciplinary committees, supporting continuous improvement and alignment with organizational goals.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Education & Professional Development

  • Provides educational and programmatic support for Ambulatory Nursing, including onboarding, orientation, and ongoing competency development.
  • Identifies learning needs and designs continuing education opportunities to enhance clinical practice, professional growth, and continuous improvement.
  • Supports implementation and evaluation of nurse-sensitive indicators and patient experience metrics, including education related to performance outcomes.

Clinical Practice & Quality Improvement

  • Promotes and integrates evidence-based practices into ambulatory nursing workflows and standards of care.
  • Analyzes quality and performance data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership to support initiatives that improve patient outcomes, safety, and experience.

Leadership, Councils & Committees

  • Provides ongoing support to the Ambulatory Nurse Leadership Council, including meeting preparation, content development, and follow-up on initiatives.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines related to ambulatory nursing practice.
  • Serves as the Ambulatory Nursing representative on the Nursing Competency Committee.
  • Acts as a Super User and Ambulatory representative for the myPATH Committee, supporting competency documentation, system optimization, and end-user education.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Functions as a subject matter expert and consultant for ambulatory nursing staff and leadership.
  • Partners with interdisciplinary stakeholders to align educational programs, competencies, and clinical standards with organizational priorities.

This position plays a critical role in advancing ambulatory nursing excellence by strengthening clinical competency, standardizing practice, supporting leadership initiatives, and driving quality and patient experience outcomes across BIDMC’s ambulatory settings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Nursing required.

  • License Registered Nurse required

  • American Heart Association – Basic Life support Certificate required.

  • 3-5 years related work experience required.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of successful work experience in nursing with two years in a specialty area.

  • Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification. Current Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license to practice in Massachusetts.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Pay Range:

$83,845.00 USD - $216,674.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
