Job Description

The Department of Surgery at Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work collaboratively with plastic surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing breast reconstruction and other reconstructive plastic surgery procedures. Responsibilities include outpatient clinic management, inpatient care, perioperative management, patient education, and coordination of care throughout the surgical continuum.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Perform comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations for new and established patients.
• Evaluate, assess, diagnose, and develop treatment plans in collaboration with attending plastic surgeons.
• Manage preoperative and postoperative care for patients undergoing microsurgical breast reconstruction, implant-based reconstruction, revision procedures, and other reconstructive surgeries.
• Conduct inpatient rounds, monitor patient progress, and coordinate discharge planning.
• Order, interpret, and manage laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and other clinical testing.
• Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with New York State regulations and institutional policies.
• Perform wound assessments, drain management, suture and staple removal, and other approved clinical procedures.
• Recognize and appropriately manage postoperative complications, escalating care when indicated.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary care with Breast Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Physical Therapy, Nursing, and ancillary services.
• Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, expected recovery, postoperative care, and long-term follow-up.
• Facilitate timely scheduling of surgeries, follow-up appointments, imaging, and consultations.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation within the electronic medical record.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
• Current New York State license as a Physician Assistant or Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner, as applicable.
• Current national certification (NCCPA for Physician Assistants; FNP, AGNP, ANP, or other applicable certification for Nurse Practitioners).
• Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Plastic Surgery, Breast Surgery, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, or another surgical specialty.
• Experience with microsurgical breast reconstruction.
