NURSE PRACTITIONER
Grade: RPN6
Location: Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, Melbourne Assessment Prison, Metropolitan Remand Centre, Ravenhall Correctional Centre, and Western Plains Correctional Centre.
May be required to work at other sites from time to time.

ABOUT US:
Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria.
Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community.

The primary focus of this work is on providing clinical services for the effective assessment, treatment and management of forensic patients and clients and people with a mental illness who have offended or are at risk of offending. We are committed to providing Recovery-orientated forensic mental health services in which the principles of hope, social inclusion, personalised care and genuine collaboration are fundamental to practice.
These services are delivered through three streams, inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and prison based services at several locations. Forensicare provides a comprehensive research program and specialist training and professional education for our staff and mental health and associated fields.
PRISON SERVICES
We provide mental health services in prisons across Victoria. We strive to provide the same standard of services and care to people in prisons that anyone else experiencing mental illness can access at an area mental health service.
Our work in prisons includes:
• triage
• on-site assessments
• ongoing clinical care and support
• harm prevention and crisis interventions
• outpatient clinics and episodic care
• custodial mental health units
• rehabilitation and transition to community programs.

POSITION OBJECTIVE
In Victoria, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is defined as “a registered nurse educated for advanced practice who is an essential member of an interdependent health care team and whose role is determined by the context in which (they) practice.” The position is responsible to the Clinical Director (or delegate) for the standard of extensions to practice. The NP practices with autonomy within an interdisciplinary framework Forensicare to maximise access to expert forensic mental health nursing care to promote recovery and optimum outcomes for prisoners experiencing mental illness.
The main components of the role are:
• Expert assessment – holistic mental health and risk assessments.
• Advocacy and access – ensuring timely access to appropriate mental health care and treatment Managing risk – applying risk management principles within a custodial setting.
• Complex mental health care and treatment – specialised interventions with highly complex and behaviourally challenging prisoners.
• Transition planning – facilitating successful transition from the prison to the community for prisoners with a mental illness

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
• Registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Division 1 nurse with endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Extensive and advanced clinical knowledge and at least five years of experience in mental health nursing
