Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Overnight

Nexus Children’s Hospital – Dallas

Schedule: Overnight | 15 shifts per month

Provide specialized care for children with complex medical needs.

Nexus Children’s Hospital – Dallas is seeking an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner to provide overnight medical coverage for pediatric patients with complex medical, neurological, and behavioral needs. Our hospital brings together medical care, neurobehavioral services, and rehabilitation to help patients achieve meaningful progress.

Working collaboratively with the Medical Director, attending physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary treatment team, the Nurse Practitioner assesses and manages patient needs, responds to changes in condition, and supports continuity of care throughout the night.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide comprehensive overnight medical care, including patient assessments, physical and neurological examinations, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Monitor patient status, identify changes in condition, and initiate timely interventions, including emergency and life-saving measures when needed.
  • Order and interpret laboratory studies and diagnostic tests to guide clinical decisions.
  • Prescribe medications and other treatments within authorized scope of practice, prescriptive authority, and facility guidelines.
  • Consult with attending and on-call physicians regarding significant changes, unexpected events, or patient needs requiring physician involvement.
  • Collaborate with nursing, behavioral health, rehabilitation, and other clinical teams to implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of assessments, interventions, treatment plans, and patient progress.
  • Provide clear handoffs to support continuity between overnight and daytime care teams.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff regarding medical conditions, treatment plans, and ongoing care needs.
  • Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and behavioral management practices appropriate to the patient population.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in nursing as a Nurse Practitioner, or a master’s degree in nursing with completion of a post-master’s Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.

Experience

  • Preferably three to five years of experience in long-term rehabilitation with neurobehavioral clients.
  • Pediatric acute care or inpatient experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills and the ability to recognize and respond to changes in pediatric patient condition.

Licensure and Certification

  • Current Texas licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Texas Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (APRN-NP).
  • National certification as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC).
  • Current BLS certification, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
  • Participation in behavioral management and de-escalation techniques training as required by the facility.
  • Certification in behavior management or a related program, such as SAMA, ABA, PIP, or equivalent.
